There are MANY things that can cause the so-called "blue screen of death." If a site purports to be able to stop you from having that issue, it's likely a scam, and it could very well install malicious software without your knowledge. The thing to do is to copy down information from the actual error message and then research it on-line. Often, you'll find a driver issue or program abnormality that has triggered the issue and which more often than not is relatively easy to fix. If worse comes to worse, you can always run System Restore to return your computer to a state before you first received a blue screen error if you're running Windows ME, XP, or Vista. And sometimes, blue screens can happen with no real cause; sometimes, you can receive one, restart your system, and not have another system problem for six months! Just use your common sense when you see promises of quick system fixes; always do some research before diving in. And install McAfee's Site Advisor, which rates Web sites on their safety based on number of infected downloads, spam E-mail, and whether or not the system attempts to load malicious software on your system. It also integrates with search results from Google, so you can check the relative safety of a site before you even try to visit it. Its up to you but I would avoid any online scanner, because you don't know if they are installing malicious software without your knowledge.

Told by who, exactly? If you were told by a popup or online ad, I'd avoid it at all costs.
