How has the recession affected your job?

I work in a restaurant. Sales in January are traditionally slow, but it's worse than ever right now.

No, never a dull moment where I work, also my country isn't in recession and it's summer.

In my country, is there are heaps of good high paying jobs in all industries. The problem is overseas workers who normally come here to Australia to fill the positions can't afford to even come here due to recessions in there countries.

Due to this a lot of us are now working twelve hour rotating shifts six to seven days a week and are being asked to take on a second job.

To fill empty vacancy's, and the government here is lowering the bar of entry and is employing more South Pacific Islanders.

All the cafes, restaurants and bars are looking for staff , there are want adds for staff on almost every window. It's shameful to hear you guy's in the states are doing it rough and will be for the next few years.

When there is so much work here, a waiter or waitress gets over $18.90 an hour plus shift penalities 10% afternoon or 15 % night time and time a half working Saturdays and double time on a Sunday and triple on a public holiday. Plus tips and paid superannuation and weekly laundry.

Taxes here are low, there free a universal healthcare system which is 100% tax and levy free. Food and Gas is cheap,

There are thousands of jobs like this on offer here in Australia only no staff to fill the positions.

I work in the hotel business, and during Nov/Dec I was cut back to 3 & 4 days a week when there were no check-in's. I had to cut back (again) on groceries & gas to pay other bills. The good thing is that when we do pick back up, I'm going to try and stick to the budget I'm doing now and save the extra that I done without the last couple of months. Maybe then I won't be caught with my (finance) pants down.

Yes, my income from work has dropped by 1/4 percent in the last 3 years. Last year was the worst drop, I have been getting my hours cut back more and more.
