can filtered, soft, tap water that is in plastic jars go bad?

I am using for power outages.

How can I tell if the water is bad? Is there a better way to keep tap water? and for how long?

It would smell bad or there would be stuff floating in it.

I would think that it would go bad because the air that gets trapped in there, and there is still bacteria, etc. in your "filtered" water.

Why don't you just buy a couple gallon jugs at your grocery store? It's not that much (less than $1) and will keep longer.
