Hardware and software for a laptop?

My daughter willed her Gateway laptop to me. My house currently gets cable-supplied broadband, and there is a cable company modem atttached to a conventional computer.

Can I get a similar arrangement for the laptop ( it would be essentially a stationary computer)? If I wanted to continue use of the laptop in a wireless mode, what hardware would I need to add to the labtop and what type software would I need?

you can get a similar arrangement for the laptop if you wanted to use it as a stationary computer. Just allow the cable company to install a cable jack in the room where the laptop is located. The cable company will load the IP address and you should be up and running. The wireless mode is the best route as you can purchase a wireless router and the software and hardware is pretty easy to install. You will have to add a password to enhance security when using your laptop wirelessly the instructions are in the box and pretty simple. Hope this helps?

i was kind of confused without a few things answered... like do u life together? but anywho,, if you want to do wireless intoernet for your laptop you need to find out what it supports... probably G network so you should go out buy a wireless router which basicaly take ur internet and allows you to have more out-ports to ethernet cabled computers but if you have wireless then it connects to them wirelessly... another great thing to have is a media port in the router which you could connect a external harddrive and use it with any computer connected to the modem or plug in your printer and be able to print wirelessly...

Source(s): from what i understood you live separate and only have a modem... which will only be able to connect wired to one computer.. ? and you wanted a small explanation of what to do to connect wirelessly

    1) You will need a "Wireless Router" to connect to your cable modem.

    2) If your laptop does NOT have a wireless adapter you will need to purchase one (pcmcia or usb).

The software will come with your router and adapters.

well they can only track your usage if your on their network. To clear the HD you need your windows disc. When you first start up the laptop a screen pops up and at the bottom it will say push <button> to enter setup. do that and in set up got to the boot tab and make your CD-ROM your first boot device then save and exit. now put the windows disc in and reboot. it will start up from the CD and you want to do an install. when it gets to the part asking which partition to install to delete all partitions and create a new one and continue with the install on that partition. now your computer is clean of all thier programs and settings

A Router is what you want, to share the internet connection between the desktop and the laptop.

In order to have a wireless connection in your home, you have to install a wireless router and hook it up to your cable or ADSL internet connection.

There are many wireless routers on the market from $40 to $150, Apple's Airport Extreme http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/ and Airport Express http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/
