A monsoon is a seasonal wind which blows in a particular direction during a particular period of the year ;it reverses its direction during the remaining period.Hence its onset can be easily predicted.India is a large scale monsoon country. The monsoon which blows over India is the biggest and most important monsoon system. The south-west monsoon,as it is called, blows during the period June to September and its onset may occur a few days earlier or may be delayed by a few days in a year.Hence the error in the forecast may be within a few days only. The monsoon reverses its direction during the period October to December and is called north-east monsoon.

Monsoon forms in the same way as a sea-breeze is created.A sea-breeze forms when the land and its adjacent sea surface(particularly in coastal regions) are heated unequally during the day time by the solar radiation.Due to this unequal heating, land gets heated more and the air above it becomes warm and rises. To occupy its place, cold air from the sea(sea gets heated slowly than land and the air above it is comparatively colder) moves towards the land and this movement of air is known as sea-breeze.Similarly,Indian monsoon is caused by the unequal heating of the Northern Hemisphere(where land area is more) and the Southern Hemisphere(where sea area is more) during Northern Summer.Due to this unequal heating, air becomes warmer and rises creating a low pressure area north of the Himalayas which attracts the comparatively colder,moisture-laden air from the Indian ocean over the Southern Hemisphere. This wind crosses the equator from the Southern Hemisphere and becomes south-east wind and blows over the Indian Penisula as south-west monsoon.During October to December, the reverse thing happens and the north-east monsoon blows from the north-east direction.

A monsoon is a very heavy rainstorm that usually happens within the Southern Asia area, and it can also happen in around the India Area.
