Operative system: series 40 vs Symbian in Nokia cell phones?
I understand that it's better the Symbian than the old Series 40, but can anyone explain with more detail?
I'm deciding between Nokia 5310 and 5320, there's a $50 difference. Thanks!
Thank you very much for your answers. But I still would like to know more detail.
I'm an unsophisticated user, just want the phone for calls and text messages. What would be the advantage of buying the Nokia with Symbian? Thanks

Series 40 has nothing to do with Symbian OS.
Series 40 is a Java based software platform based on a minimalistic Nokia OS. The capabilities of a Series 40 phone are limited both in terms of hardware and software although the phones are excellent for unsophisticated users.
If you need a smartphone then you should pay the extra 50 bucks, in fact you should pay a bit more and get a really god smartphone such as the N-series or E-series
Update: if you are an unsophisticated user you should only care about the following: on Symbian smartphones you can install more complex applications (and better games) as the OS gives developers more power and flexibility. The smartphones, Nokia calls some of them multimedia computers, are more advanced from a hardware perspective, they are the top of the line.
But at the end of the day what matters for you should be phone's overall design and price so you probably also know that the smartphones are cool but expensive.
I hope this helps.

I would go with an Android device. Symbian is almost on it's way out and there are not many apps out there for it. Nokia will put more focus on it's Windows Phone line than try to update their Symbian, and this reflects on developers, almost no one wants to put a big effort on a platform that is not growing significantly. There's a reason why Jobs wanted Android out of the picture and promoted all the law demands, and it is that he saw Android as a big threat to his product line. Some Nokia phones have been very strong in the falling down department, but I had a Samsung Galaxy Ace and dropped it several times to hard floor and it had just a little cosmetic damage, but nothing medium or mayor.

symbian is just a general operating system.. such as windows. You have different versions of the overall operating system. windows xp, windows 98, symbian s40, symbian s60, symbian s80, etc.
Symbian s40 is not a smartphone platform.
a symbian s60 would be worth the extra $50
