Is bathing a child in a normal bath tub bad for them?

Ok I need a little advice.... I have a small two month old. He hates the infant bath tub so I decided that instead of fight him I would bath him in a normal tub with like an inch and a half of water. (My husband and I live in the same house as his parents.) My mother in law started to but in and tell me that he was going to get sick of I didn't use the infant tub.... the water was getting in his ears when he turned his head to look at me. I also made sure I used infant q-tips and got most of the water out when he was done. Will this give him an ear infection for doing this??

I use the normal tub for my three month old. He hated his infant tub because he is too tall for it and it kept too much of his body out of the water. I guess he got cold. I either get in the tub with him, or I have a bath seat...it's like an incline that you lay him on and I just put that in the big tub. He hasn't had any ear infections. Be careful with the q-tips though, those can be dangerous. I just use the corner of the towel to dry his ears.

Edit: You got me a little paranoid about ear infections, so I researched past questions on this. Seems babies can't get an ear infection from getting water in their ears. Read this article, it really makes sense! http://www.drgreene.com/21_750.html

No it will not give your child an ear infection. First of all, the ear, nose and throat are all connected. When the ear does not drain properly, that is how ear infections occur i.e. after a cold is the most likely of times to get an ear infection. My son gets ear infections frequently and he may have to get tubes put into his ears. It's a common myth that water in the ear causes ear infections. Also, it's fluid that builds up behind the ear.. that is why it is called "An Inner Ear Infection". Don't believe me, ask the pediatrician.

For the bathtub, I just use one of those bouncer looking things that you can put into a tub or sink. My son enjoyed taking baths, but my daughter hates the baby bathtub too. I recently bought the bouncer thing and she is so quiet and even coos when I give her baths now.

Once you confirm with your pediatrician about the cause ear infections, I would tell the mother-in-law and tell her it's not the stone ages anymore.

I wouldn't use the q-tips, just the edge of a towel. My son also hated the infant tub (it's really hard to keep warm) and we used the normal tub. I got in with him and just bathed him on my lap. I still do at 10 months. It works really well for us and I don't have to worry about water in his ears. If not, perhaps you can think about getting one of those bath things that you can rest him in while bathing him.

The Q-tip isn't going to get the ear completely dry. You could expect an increase in the chances of getting an ear infection, especially with the cold weather.

It is the same as swimming under water and the being exposed to cold weather. I understand where she is coming from.

There were a couple of occasions I bathed my daughter in the tub like that; doing it every time would scare me.

I don't understand why you are having to 'fight' with your son in the tub? Is there enough water in the infant tub to keep him warm; is too much of his body exposed to the cold air? Why is he objecting to the tub?

Ah no dear it isn't - my son grew out of his tub in a week so i had to use the normal tub.

Just rinse it out with hot water first, them put a little bit of water in it for his bath - he will be fine.

He can only get an ear infection if the water is dirty or there is germs living in the tub or water - so rinse it out, and get TEA TREE OIL, and wipe the bath out with it, than rise it - tea tree is natures disinfectant - but only use a few drops on a clean cloth - it is very strong.

It might. But why do you say he hates the infant tub? You could also try the sink or just sponge bathing him to avoid the water getting in his ears.

I bathe my toddler approximately two times a week, yet while she replaced into under 3 months outdated I each so often went an entire week between her baths. some advise no longer bathing infants till the twine stub is long previous, making use of a heat damp washcloth to scrub with meanwhile. I even have in no way used toddler oil on my daughter so i won't communicate to how that ought to artwork. i think of that's thoroughly frequent for her to cough each so often while she is feeding. That in all possibility potential the milk is popping out somewhat too rapid at cases, in spite of the incontrovertible fact that it is not a project. As she gets somewhat older she would have the capacity to get greater used to the pass.

Its not good for him.. could possibly lead to ear infections or swimmers ear...

You can bathe him in a big tub if you keep his ears and mouth above the water...

Also make sure its clean.. people stand in there and shower...

Its not safe to use Q tips either really.. general rule is whatever you can see, usually just his outer ear, is the only place a Q tip should go..

It could but as long as you got most the water out he should be fine.. From now on though i would get one of those bath pillows and put it underneath his head so that way the water cant get in his ears.

Not really but my partner and i both take turns to have baths with our two kids. and bout the ears infection there is putty that you can get from the chemist and it is safe and designed for little babies ears to stop the water from getting in. and its only in so many jkids that get ears infections from in bath waters. its also a good bonding time so take turns and dont listen to anyone and have it as deep as its not like you would let go of them we do and they think they are swimmin. hope that helped enjoy your bath time.
