The General standard for Ethernet is IEEE 802.3

Within the Ethernet standard we use(At the national park I work in):

    10BASE-T, 10MB/s over CAT(4 and 5)

    100BASE-TX 100MB/s over Cat5

    1000BASE-T 1GB/s over Cat5e

Depending on your hardware, and ability to upgrade, this is what the majority of Federal branches use. Just like any business there is not always a need to give everyone the latest and greatest tech.

For explanations of the 802.3 Standard check out the Wikipedia page on it.

    Or for Ethernet specifically
