you should keep a notebook to keep a running tally of each date you had to drive for volunteer purposes and you should include:

    - date

    - business for which the miles were driven (if you have multiple businesses)

    - destination

    - primary purpose of the trip

    - beginning odometer reading

    - ending odometer reading

    - business miles driven

    - personal miles driven

read this article, it has a lot of good info:

Check out the link below to Schedule A. Page A-7 will describe volunteer mileage. You could keep a log showing the mileage you drive each day for the charity and the purpose of the mileage and for what organization.

Of course to deduct this mileage, you must have enough expenses you paid to itemize your deductions on Sch. A. If your standard deduction for your filing status is more than the total of your itemized deductions, you would deduct the standard deduction since it would save you more on your taxes.

    I hope this helps.

The volunteer mileage allowance is listed as a cash contribution in the amount of the miles driven times the volunteer mileage rate.

Documentation would be list of dates, miles driven for charity on that date, organization name, and purpose of driving. If you did not create this at the time, sit down now and list the dates your drove and other information. It will be much harder to remember it later.

    1. A mileage log.

    2. Any other proof that you really did volunteer work for the charity.
