The Doors or Led Zeppelin?

I'm leaning to the doors simply becuase with out them, led zeppelin probably wouldn't exist. And because Jim Morrison is outstanding. What do you think?

this question brings back so many memories....I had a boyfriend back in the 80's and he had a Led Zeppelin Jean jacket and I had a Doors jacket well Jim Morrison, and we argued to no end which was better. Most people would say Led Zeppelin but If you really read up about Jim Morrison he was seductive , intelligent and and downright sexy.... i choose THE DOORS

The Doors for their lyrics/innovative music style.

Led Zeppelin for their technique (few compare to Jimmy Page).

I agree, Led Zeppelin probably would not exist without The Doors and that Jim Morrison is a musical genius. But I guess I like different qualities for each band. : )

How the hell do you figure that Led Zeppelin wouldn't exist without the Doors? The Doors first album came out in 1967, Led Zeppelin formed in 1968 by Jimmy Page, who in the EARLY 60's was a part of The Yardbirds. Some music he wrote for Yardbirds never got onto the last album, so he took it and formed Led Zeppelin. The rest, he stole... and it's obvious that a great deal of the music is ripped off from other people. Some of it is blatant plagerism, where he took and re-did the whole song. Some, he took chord progressions from other people and wrote new songs, like Stairway to Heaven.

Led Zeppelin is one of the greatest rock bands in history, and one of my favorites... but because they stole a lot of music and tried to pass it off on their own gives my vote to The Doors.

That being said, Led Zeppelin had WAY more hits than the Doors, partly because their frontman didn't die of an overdose... and Led Zeppelin can claim the best song ever written.

Led Zeppelin still would have been around if the Doors never existed.

These are two great bands. However, when it came to lyrics I would have to give the edge to Jim Morrison. On the other hand, when it came to the actual music I would have to side with Led Zeppelin. Jimmy and Robert could definately arrange their music and at the same time in a groundbreaking way. I really don't think LZ was influenced a great deal by the Doors. They came from different sides of the pond with their own ideas and influences. I'm going with LZ.

They are far too different to compare like that, but saying that Led Zep "wouldn't exist without The Doors" is just silly. Led Zep's influences were ALL blues based, while The Doors were basically a College / Art rock band, just as Radiohead or REM were later.

The only possible similarity is in Morrison and Plant as front men, but even then there are major differences. Morrison was a great showman in front of a fair but not outstanding band. Plant was a good showman in front of a great band. Also, Morrison was a hopeless human being and total junkie, and Plant is still alive...which speaks volumes.

EDIT: ALL rock is basically based on the blues...but the Doors show little direct interest in it in their songs and developed their own sound. Led Zep is essentially an amplified blues band. That doesn't make them better or worse, just different.

Oh, and Bonham was also a drunk and a junkie. End of story.

    is this a joke?

The Doors are a solid classic rock band that transcend the times, BUT, can't touch the legacy and long term effect Led Zeppelin has had on music over the years.
