Do you have a better butter-cream frosting recipe than I do?

When I was growing up, my mom made butter-cream frosting with a stick of butter, a 1-lb box of confectioner's sugar, a little vanilla and a little milk.

It's far to sickly-sweet for me. I like Swiss Meringue butter-cream, but I'm working on my daughter's birthday cake, and frankly, the nuances are lost on her five-year-old palate. Plus I just don't have time to do the whole meringue thing.

If you have a quick, easy, not-too-sweet butter-cream frosting recipe, I'd be very grateful!

Update:

CMC, I agree. But really, it's a time thing.

I appreciate all the folks sharing their recipes, but would you please not send me the same thing I already have? I already know you can use butter/oleo, throw in a ton of powdered sugar and a little milk and flavoring and get something that looks like frosting and tastes like sugar.

I'm always use this butter cream recipes for cake, cupcake or even to decorate some chocolate cake. The feedback are real good. It's easy and not too sweet and creamy. I'm sure children will love it. :)

    - 200 g, unsalted butter

    - 100 g, shortening

    - 1/4 tsp, salt

    - 1 can, sweetened condensed milk (around 380-400 g)

    - vanilla extract or as desired

Beat butter, shortening and salt together until butter is fluffy and double in volume, may take up to 15 minutes.

Then slowly pour in condensed milk while beating butter until well blended. Add vanilla extract and taste it.

    Enjoy~

This recipe is very creamy & not too sweet...

    2 cups butter, softened

    1 cup heavy whipping cream

    1 cup confectioners' sugar

    DIRECTIONS

In a large bowl, Whip the butter on high speed, occasionally scraping down the sides of the bowl. Whip until double in volume. This takes a very long time, approximately 10 minutes.

While still whipping, drizzle in the heavy cream. Continue whipping until the mixture is stiff, approximately 2 to 4 minutes.

Add 1/2 of the confectioners sugar and whip until smooth. At this point, you can taste the frosting and determine if you would like to add more sugar to sweeten to taste.

How about adding an 8 oz pkg of cream cheese to your butter while creaming it, then proceed with the rest of your ingredients. We use that recipe for our cinnamon rolls and get great reviews.

Sparki77 hi, you should know better than that at your level, good things take time, and come on it is for your daughters birthday. You know the best way is the true and tested way, start taking too many deviations it's sure to screw up.
