Why do my parakeets squawk really loud right after their breakfast every morning?

I have a male and a female parakeet that were given to me and my husband as a gift for Christmas. We were a little dumbfounded because we've never shown any interest in having birds (or any other pets right now as we already have 3 dogs, 2 cats, a turtle, and some fish). We have very little parakeet knowledge. But, we've tried covering the birds' cage with a blanket. We've tried giving them "calm down food". They always have plenty of fresh food, fresh water, fresh millet spray, a clean cage, a toy, and one of those big scraper things for their beaks. But, every morning, after their breakfast, they squawk and chase each other around the cage. The squawking is SO LOUD and wakes me up very abruptly some mornings. Does anyone know why they do this and what I can do to stop it?

Odds are, that where the parakeets were bought from, they were played with at the same time every day and are used to early human interaction in the morning from the pet store. Try keeping the room dim until you wake up or keeping the birds in a room further from your bedroom. Birds squawk for attention, so if you don't want them to make noise in the morning ignore the noise for about a month.

Why anyone would give pets as a gift I can't fathom. You should let whoever got you the birds know that while birds are a lovely gift for someone with bird knowledge- they are not a generally appropriate gift for the uninformed. Hopefully, that will stop them from giving parakeets to others who are equally unprepared.

Think of the birds as humans. When you wake up in the morning you get ready for work or play. You look for a nice breakfast and food to keep you going for the day. You say good morning to your partner and family and so on. You possibly go for a jog or a walk before breakfast. Your birds are only starting their daily routine the same way as you do. Except, they do it in their cage. Enjoy your birds. The person that gave you them as a present thought that you were capable of looking after them. That is a compliment to you. Don't disappoint them. With the pets you already had, i don't think it would be long before you got birds for yourself anyhow. I think you look for a challenge and the love of pets that you have is a consolation. Congratulations. I think you are doing fine. Love your pets and they will love you.

The budgies "should" be quiet if their cage is covered and the room is dark, as someone already mentioned. My budgies have freak out time each day. Some do it individually, some do it together. It's almost like they have to complain for a while. The other answerer is correct. You are doing fine. Good luck with keeping them quiet.

Do you put the blanket on after they start or the night before when you go to bed?

If you put it on after they start thats not going to work, you have to put it on the night before, right before you got to bed.

If you do put it on the night before then i kinda dont know what to tell you, one of my two budgies does the same thing but thankfully its in the middle of the day. if i do want him to shut up i usually just put thier cage on the floor for a little while, that scares them some so they get quite

Yes, I carry around a dictionary and every time I see a word I like or don't know the meaning to I write it down with the definition.
