Why are some file names blue in Windows XP?

But others are black? What is the significance?

Thanks for your help. :-)

Compressed file names are shown in a different color.

I'll look up how to change it - BRB ...

To get rid of that option, take the following steps:

    1. Open "My Computer - click the "Start" key and tap the letter "e" (kind of like "Shift"-e, but use the "Start" key instead.

    2. Click on "Tools" and select "Folder Options".

    3. Click the "View" tab.

    4. Move to the very bottom of the list of options.

    5. The next to the last option is "Show encrypted or compressed NTFS files in color.

    6. Click the box to remove the check mark.

    7. Click the "Apply to All Folders" button.

    8. Click "OK".

You can skip step 6 if you don't want to change it.

    Good luck.

These are files with NTFS compression.

If you right click on a file or folder and go to 'advanced...' in the attributes section (where you can select read-only, etc), there is an option to "compress this file/folder to save disk space".

If it's blue it is probably a link such as: http://www.yahoo.com./ When clicked on, it will connect you with that site. If this isn't the case then it could be that the file name was saved in blue, though I'm not sure why anyone would bother.
