Small dog breed VS Big dog breed.?

So we all know we have preferences. You may like a huge dog like the Irish wolfhound while your sister prefers the tiny Yorkshire terrier.

Well i have noticed that the big dog lovers typically "hate" or "dislike" little dogs. (I am not talking about all big dogs lovers just stating what i have noticed) or vise versa.

I honestly like the small breeds better but again just preference. To be exact the chihuahua. Now this is where we get into the question. When i see a question regarding chihuahuas. There is usually one or more answers stating "chihuahuas are yappy, nippy, ankle bitters." Which always PO's me. Most chihuahuas are nor yappy or nippy or whatever the heck uneducated people say about them. Chihuahuas are small and fragile. Now picture yourself that small. Now picture children picking you up playing with you roughly and dropping you. What would you do? I would bite! You got to think in the dogs perspective. Dogs are only how you make them out to be. If you have a chihuahua puppy. You never socialize it or teach it wrong from right. Well... when that dog goes out into the real world everything is bigger then it, it is scared being that it was never socialized. Its only defense is to bite and bark.

Same with big dogs. Like the famous killer pit bull. Pit bull attacks are from unsocialized, un-neutered, abused pit bulls. Pit bulls are one of the sweetest most loyal dog breed in the world.

Or what about the mastiffs or st bernard's. Just because the dogs giant doesnt mean its going to attack and kill you. The giant breeds are typically the sweetest breeds. I honestly don't get it?

So anyway....

Why is it that people with big dogs talk down on little dogs and vise versa?

Little dogs are my preference but that doesnt mean i hate big dogs. Big dogs are wonderful to me.

So why do you think this discrimination happens??

Whats your opinion?

It really annoys me when people are so prejudice against the size of dogs. I like small dogs eg pomeranians, i like medium dogs eg. bull terriers, and i like large dogs eg. newfoundlands

But some people are so rude, when I was walking my pom there was a man and his little daughter. So I walked past and he said something about my dog being a rat. Then this daughter said no it isn't, its a small dog, and the dad said "no, that is what you call a rat dog". I was thinking your toddler daughter knows more about dogs than you!

Everyone has their own preference of dogs, small, medium or large, me I love them all and my preferences in the breeds I love are

    Min.Schnauzers

    Newfoundlands

    Akita

    Malamutes

    Rhodesian Ridgebacks

    Great Pyrenees

    Rotti's

These are my fave breeds, and I do have a small dog as well, I love my Schnauzers, this is the only small breed I would own....

I am not against any breed, and it does make me mad when someone talks down about any breed, especially when they do not know the breed.

    Love them all....

Legit::There just are big dog lovers and then some people that only love the small or medium breeds....its not discrimination, its the breed they love and prefer...

Like the Irish Wolfhound, huge massive dog, and I have seen owners with them and also own a Jack Russell to boot...its just a preference...

And the big breeds can be so sweet, and get blamed for bad things, this gives the breed a bad name...but you hardly ever hear, oh no that Boston Terrier just ripped off the neighbors leg....small dog, small bites still hurt LOL

RE: Small breed dog food vs. large breed dog food? Ok so me and my husband are in a debate..he claims that feeding a small breed dog large breed dog food will make her grow extra large and will make her bones grow, thus making her bigger all around. I do not agree with this I think that regardless of what a small breed dog eats it will stay within...

Like I've said before as the owner of a big dog breed(Siberina Husky) who people have discriminated against in the past, it makes me mad because A LOT of small dog owners let their dogs bark, growl, bite, lunge and do all kinds of aggressive behaviour and don't discipline them... That really pisses me off then the big dogs are the ones that take the rap. I do not HATE all little dogs only the owners who think its cute when their dog bites and growls!!!

I like both. In my experiences small dogs tend to be more neurotic, bite prone and higher energy than the big working breeds.

My friend's English mastiff and my other buddy's st. bernard are amazing with kids, even letting them tug on them and ride them like horses. My friend with a pug and a chihuahua cant keep them near little kids for fear theyll strike and bite if played with too rough.

So, for reasons solely on how they act around children, Im gonna say that bigger dogs are my preference and tend to be more easy going around the little ones.

Small dogs fit our lifestyle better between my parents and I we have 5 chihuahuas. We let them run around the house but they do have crates and use potty pads because they are so small so they don't go outside to often except for the chihuahua/bulldog she goes out supervised only. We live in a country setting so we don't let any of them out without us. The Pedigree.com dog food site has a test and breed gallery you can take a look at so you can see what type of dog fits your lifestyle best. Good Luck.

EDIT>>>>>>>>>>www.animalplanet.com has a fun dog breed test too and information. Great site.

PS. The thumbs down Troll is in the neighborhood!!!!

Every dog needs some type of training. The first class I ever took a dog to was https://tr.im/chP70

It's a very basic kind of class. They will help you with your dog, and show you how to work with your dog at home.

They'll also answer any questions you have about your dog's particular problems and how to handle them. The most important thing in dog training is to be consistent and work with your dog at home on the lessons. The PetSmart class teaches sit, down, come, and the very basics every dog needs to know. They will also help socialize your dog. You are unhappy with an untrained dog, and believe it or not, the dog is actually unhappy to. You need to take your dog now, as the older he gets, the harder it will be to correct your dog's bad habits. Plus the classes are fun for you and your dog. My dog went from that first PetSmart class on to advanced obedience classes. You might also contact your local humane society. The one in my area offers obedience classes with a very good trainer at a reduced price.

I think you answered your own question....You've picked up on Stereotypes on both small dogs and big dogs. Just like Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Dobermans, etc., being "Mean". People Believe what they read, even though they've never actually met the breed of dog they're talking about.

As for me, I prefer Medium sized dogs, but I don't "Hate" any dog, big or small - Medium just works best for me and my lifestyle.

I think its human tendency to think whatever you have is the best....

You see this with people about male/female too. Some think females are better pets others think males. And usually the people dont have experience with the sex they didnt have!

I think you are right on about all of it though. It really is how they are raised. Some breeds do have a tendencey toward certain personality traits though. Its just a matter of preference. And what is right for me might not be for you. Thank goodness or everyone in the world would be walking around with collies! lol

  • Well i have a GSD and a Yorkshire Terrier -- i like big and small breeds.

But i know what you are saying, how many times have you heard ?" you don't own a proper dog" because it is a small breed.
