Wow, I'm really sorry to hear about your friend. I guess considering that there will be no reception, DJ, etc etc, you don't need to be as strict with some of these "unspoken rules" and "traditions" of the wedding... So I would probably go ahead and throw that bachelorette party. Even ff the wedding gets postponed for another year, you have already fulfilled your duty, and I doubt you will be expected to throw a second bachelorette party anyway ;) That said, I'm one of those screw-the-tradition-let's-be-ultra- practical friend, so if she was my friend, I would probably make a more practical offer. You said she doesn't have money for the wedding, correct? So what i might suggest is that instead of diluting the wedding with all these elements we can't afford, why not just do one thing and do that one thing right? I would offer, for instance, to forego the bachelorette party, but in instead spend the money I had set aside for the party to buying her a wedding cake and basic decorations instead. She can throw a simple potluck in the park (the guests can bring dishes instead of gifts), and the party will be festive enough with a proper wedding cake, some cute confetti to throw, and some nice music to dance to (mp3). This might solve a few issues you had at once - for one, you can be sure that "something" is served at the wedding ;) Also, being somewhat directly responsible for a portion of the wedding will also ensure that you can push your friend to actually go through with the wedding. I'm also puzzled why you and the bridesmaids are expected to buy dresses... if the wedding is so low budget and there's no photographer in sight.. is that even necessary? Couldn't she just tell you her favorite color and then have you guys figure something out from what you already have in your closets...? Sorry, this is just me wondering out aloud....
