2002 dodge diesel truck fuel pump ?

I have a 2002 dodge diesel truck. I've been told if the lift pump goes out it will kill the injector pump. Is that true? If it is should I go ahead a replace the lift pump now. I have about 135,000 mi. on it now. Or is there something I can do to prevent this. With the price of a new injector pump I would like to do everything I can do to prevent this.

Try this ,Check fuel delivery from the transfer pump by bumping the starter and then release the key. The transfer pump should run for about 25 seconds and pump at least 45 oz. of fuel.

    2. If fuel delivery is OK, remove the connector on the injection pump.

    3. Supply B+ to pin 7 and ground to pin 6. The engine should start and idle if the injection pump is good.

    4. If it still does not start then the injection pump is bad.

Their is also an update kit for the transfer pump .

It will have to be moved and it comes with the wiring harness.

You should phone your deal to see if you have had the update done.

And don't believe it covered under warranty.

    Hope this helps.

If you are unsure of the test i gave you then don't try go to a shop and have it tested.

I know this is an old post, but I can not stand misinformation like this. One day a person seeking to swap in a P7100 injection pump might perform a google search and find the nonsense above posted from somebody who has never even changed the oil on a Cummins. First off, you do NOT need new injectors. Stock 24V injectors will work just fine. They will retard the timing by 1 or 2 degrees. Not enough to notice in anyway. So save your money and ignore the ignorance saying otherwise. Second, there are conversion kits that are available for $1,600 plus the cost of the pump. These kits are overpriced as all the parts and pump can be had for less than $1,400 ($400 used pump included). You do not need the 12V mechanical pump nor can you use it without swapping in an aftermarket or 12V camshaft. The 24V cam has no fuel pump love to drive the fuel pump. You can use the stock 24V pump, or upgrade to an aftermarket one. Don't waste your time or money on a garbage VP44 stock or "hotrod". The P7100 is a million mile pump and it can be run stock, turn a few screws to 400hp, or all out to 1000hp+. This is advice from somebody that has actually done the swap and not just "wikipedia'd". All you need are the following parts- 1. Timing case & gasket 2. P7100 3. Front crank seal 4. P7100 mounts 5. P7100 timing gear 6. 24V P Pump lines (no OEM made, must be aftermarket) 7. ONLY 2001 & 2002 trucks need this. A cam sensor relocation kit in order for the truck to charge and have a working tach. There you go.

Not sure about Dodge but GM had a real problem with this in the 6.2 and 6.5 engines, they were actually covering the lift pumps under warranty for 10 years regardless of mileage, you may want to check into it and see if they have been having the same problem on Dodges

]All the ones I have done have converted the lift pump to an electric pump. With all the crap you had to buy about 200 dollars. I am not dodge diesel tech but common sense tells me the half second your injection pump is starved for diesel fuel which it does also use for lubrication, is not enough to ruin it. I have usually seen them go out at about 150k but have done them on trucks with 60k. We buy them rebuilt from bosch for about 750 dollars. It's alot better than the 1800 or whatever that dodge charges to put them on. Bottom line if you keep that truck you will have to put injection pump on it but look around because you do not have to go to the dealer. good luck.
