Lots of cavities. Is this fixable?

Okay, so I brush and floss like I'm supposed to, but after getting my wisdom teeth out 2 years ago (and all of the pain, etc that came with it) I've been afraid of going to the dentist, so I've skipped my regular cleanings/checkups for two years.

This has resulted in me having sore/swollen gums and also several visible cavities (I can see at least 4, there may be more than that). I have an appointment scheduled for next week, but what should I expect? Can multiple fillings be done in one trip, or am I in for a whole lot of dental work?

Also, is there anything I can do about my gums? They're swollen and sore, and when I brush too hard, they bleed.

For your first visit you should expect the dentist to take x-rays of your teeth. This way they can find out everything you may be in need of. They will also examine your gums to see why they are swollen and sore. They are most likely swollen and sore because you have tartar buildup under the gum line. This will need to be cleaned thoroughly. Once you have a professional cleaning the gums should go back to normal if you take good care of your teeth. Yes multiple fillings can be done in one trip. Things are fixable. It is good you are attending to your dental needs once again.

A cavity is a hole in the enamel (Hard outside layer of your tooth that protects the inside living tissues). It is caused from bacteria penetrating the enamel and seeping into the inside of the tooth. Cavities range in severity - if it is found early, sometimes you will not need to be anesthetized, if it is found too late, it can lead to a root canal (whole other procedure). The first thing that will happen is your dentist will anesthetize the area to be worked on. He/she will swab a topical ointment to numb the gum tissue, which makes the injection a little less uncomfortable. Your mouth is divided into four quadrants. Typically, the dentist works on one quadrant at a time. Sometimes, depending on the severity of the cavity, the dentist can work on more than one quadrant at at time. Not on the lower if he/she has to anesthetize (numb your mouth). When you are given anesthetic on the lower, it is called a block, and that whole side will become numb, to include the tongue. Since you cannot feel anything for a couple of hours, the chances of you biting your tongue or lip is a possibility, numbing only one side helps you realize if this is happening because you can still feel the opposite side. When anesthetizing the upper, only the tooth and lip is numb. So, you can inject both sides. Once the area is numb, he/she will use an electric, air driven drill and clean out the decay. Then a liner of some type will be placed (there are many different types out there - and different ways to apply them), then he/she will place the filling material - this can be amalgam(silver filling) or composite (tooth colored). Which type of material depends on the size of the cavity, insurance, personal preference by the dentist and patient. Your dentist will do his/her best to condense how many visits you have to make. Expect to be numb for about an hour on the upper, and up to two on the lower. If you want to know why, email me and I will explain more.

Your gums are bleeding because they have been neglected. Plaque is bacteria which sticks to your teeth (comes from the foods you eat and drink). This plaque is what causes cavities and gingivitis (swollen gums). Brushing only eliminates the plaque on tops and outsides of your teeth. Flossing is the only way to clean in between your teeth. The plaque has irritated the tissue causing it become swollen and bleed - it is a foreign being in your mouth and your body is trying to tell you to get rid it of. Think of what happens when you have a splinter, it gets red and irritated until it is removed. Same goes for your gum tissue. The more you floss, the healthier your gum tissue will become. It will tighten up and become pink again. It is recommended you floss daily. Plaque that is left on the teeth hardens to become what is called tartar. You should see the dentist twice a year for a regular check up - this will remove any plaque build up that you cannot reach your self.

Very regret to hear that you skip your regular cleaning and checkups because of your experience of the wisdom teeth extraction.

To answer your question, many cavities can be done in one day depend on how big and how you tolerate the procedure.

If you go to regular check up, then the problem will be small and the procedure is easy to tolerate.

the swollen and bleeding gum can be treated with deep cleaning. Sound like you may have major treatment. You can have two options:

    1. do a little at a time so you can tolerate the procedure.

    2. do everything at once but under sedation like nitrous oxide.

For someone who is scare to go to the dentist like you, I highly recomend nitrous oxide sedation. It will help relax you and the doctor. Plus one visit take care everything so you don't have to waste your time going back and forth. If you choose option 1, you may have to return many times. And every time you return you have to skip work, or you may have something come up. Or you are scare ... many excuses. It is hard for you to complete treatment or you have to be very self discipline to have all your problems fixed. Dont live with your problem. You may run away from it for a while but it will deninitely catch up with you. So have it checked out and fix it. Good luck!

This is certainly NOT gross, rude answerer (what are you, four?). Some people are more prone to cavities/gingivitis than others, it's somewhat hereditary. The work that you'll need depends on the state of your cavities. If they haven't affected your nerves, filling them will be quite simple. But if any single one of them has eaten through the enamel to your tooth nerves, you'll have to make two or more trips to the dentist's. Also, the swollen gums doesn't sound so good. You may have to receive treatment for that. Gum treatment is trickier than it sounds, because they have to apply anesthetics and scrape out the infections. Scary, but you won't feel a thing. The good news is, if it's not serious, they'll just let you off with a thorough cleaning. Also, my dentist always told me to brush my teeth more carefully and thoroughly when they're bleeding. She told me to NOT to avoid brushing those parts that hurt, because if you don't, they'll only get worse with the bacteria and infections. So brush thoroughly but carefully, and try using toothpaste like Sensodyne for sensitive gums and teeth. Try not to use toothpaste with teeth whitening written on it, because peroxide will hurt your gums. Finally, gargling with salt water will sting, but your dentist will love you for it. It's supposed to be good for everybody, and is recommended for even those with healthy teeth and gums. Hope this helped, good luck with your appointment!

Really? A dentist didn't see the cavity in a front tooth? Are you sure it is a cavity? or a decalcification.....brush your teeth and lay off the sodas, red bull and junk food and candy.

If your gums are bleeding, then you don't brush everyday and night. And try to not to brush really really hard. Once I got 4 cavitys and they did 2 one day. And the other day.
