How do you pro-rate part year resident income taxes?

I am a part year resident of NJ (1/1/08-8/11/08) and PA (8/12/08-12/31/08). I am filling out my income taxes for both states and noticed that I have to pro-rate each. I was wondering if someone could explain how AND what to pro-rate. If anyone has experience on pro-rating each state that would be great too.

Multiply the total for the year by the number of days in that state and divided by the number of days in the year.

    In your case:

    For NJ, multiply by 224/366.

    For PA, multiply by 142/366.
