Charge the battery for at least 16 hours before using it AT ALL. (24 hours would be even better).
Then use your laptop as normal, using the battery only, until the battery is completely discharged. Now fully recharge the battery again, overnight if possible.
Fully charging the battery BEFORE FIRST USE, then fully discharging the battery before recharging again fully will condition the battery and enable it to realise its maximum potential.
The battery should be allowed to fully discharge about once a month. This regime will also benefit phone batteries.
