Why when blacks reach elderhood their eyes turn blue?

I am black, but I noticed anyone older in my family their eyes turn bright blue. Whats the science behind this? Is it like when whites are born they tend to have blond hair until they age some then it goes brown or black?

Update:

I know what cataracts are, but thats not what they have.

Update 2:

Its amazing though, I think they look cute with them, but I don't know it would fit me when I get older, not sure what type of genes my family got.

Update 3:

Its amazing Bella!!! I see so many babies with blue eyes and I don't understand genes that they lose them later.

Update 4:

Training day: LOL blue eyes from bad diets? How sure are you? That wouled mean 90 percent of Americans should have blue eyes!! I have dyed my hair jet black because I love black hair, but my hair was slightly red and someone said its my diet too..........so food controls your eye color and hair?

As some have already pointed out melanin decreases (as with white people!) eyes get lighter and so does the hair.

All european babies are born with blue eyes but after birth their melanin level increases so their eyes turn brown, or green or stay blue!

I know! It's sad when some people think some physical characteristics are restricted to a certain race - not the case at all!

    1. Create a new layer above the photo 2. Fill the layer with black and set the the style to "hue" (instead of "normal" that it is set at by default) 3. Create a mask for the layer (little folder with a white circle at the bottom of the layers menu) 4. On the layer mask paint over the eyes with black. Alternatively, instead of creating the layer mask you can just use the eraser tool and erase the area where the eyes are so that you can see the blue underneath. This is the most simple edit you can do but in order to create a good black and white image you will probably need to also adjust levels to fix the shadows and highlights.

They lose melanin in their eyes just like their hair. Hair turns grey and eyes turn blue. Not all but most I've seen.

Well It's your family's genes. Most of the people in my family have dark brown eyes. Except me I was born with light grey eyes and now they're like a light brown-brown. I heard that there was this fact that when you age your eyes get lighter or something. But I think that's strictly your family...with the whole blue eyes thing. Possibly others, not mine tho. My family has dark brown-black hair. My hair is dark brown with brown/light brown natural Highlights.

I love my eyes, they change shades of brown and they're really beady looking, like glossy and my eyeballs are big...not the socket, but the ball itself. So I have huge brown eyes lol :P.Love It wouldn't change it for anything in the world.

I look like my parents but I tend to get a lot of genes from my grand parents or great grandparents too...idk lolXD

Like my great grand father was flat out Native American.

Maybe the pigment fading. That is very very rare: Blacks rarely have blue eyes, even with aging. White babies tend to have blue eyes and blonde hair, but the real pigment sets in and we often go darker.

My family has this too, although a part of my family does have blue or hazel eyes.

It's really just a matter of genetics that determine your melanin counts.

Yea.I know what you mean.Alot of people in my family have that and my grandmas friend who is old has baby blue eyes and he is black. It is because of loss of melanin.Eyes that are dark brown are rich in melanin while eyes that are blue lack melanin and are not rich in it.

We lose melanin as we get older. about 15% of our original supply of melanin is lost in the eye by the age of forty and about 25% is lost by the age of fifty. melanin lenses provide us with a way of compensating for this lost melanin. For people with blue eyes, melanin lenses offer a means of acquiring extra melanin protection in harsh light environments. the role melanin plays in eye protection is critical; eye doctors have reported that melanin in the eye reduces the risk of age-related macular degeneration

bad diet in your family. tell them to stay away from too much fatty meats and refined carbs and alcohol or blunts and whatnot. eat fruits veges wholegrains and drink lots of

EDIT. lol all am saying is that if your eyes start changing abnormally then the diet is almost always the culprit

    Wow, I;ve noticed too.

My mom, my grandma, my uncle have that, i thought it was because of their white ancestry.
