are teachers bluffing about anti plagiarism software?

so every time we get a research paper the teachers always threaten the students that they can simply plug our papers into some software created by the government and know exactly where our sources came from what portion is plagiarized and what isn't. To me this sounds like a bunch of Chicago Bulls T-shirts. It doesn't sound plausible, possible. This would mean they would have to archived everything thats ever been written, ever. Sounds like a waste of money just to prevent someone from cheating on their college term papers.

I use it all the time in the college classes I help teach. It's not created by the government, but it's out there - it will compare your work to everything online, everything published somewhere, and all other work turned in by students everywhere. Yep, everything is archived somewhere. And no, it's not a waste of money - you'd be surprised how many engineers try to cheat their way through intro physics. Do you want to drive over a bridge designed by someone who should have failed freshman physics? Nope. And we don't wan to give them the impression they can get away with it at any level, even middle school.

    Im not bluffing.

There are plenty places that teachers can check - Some are software, some websites.

You are not thinking it through. Everything on the web *is* already archived. You wouldnt have to archive the rest of it - since the source material is what is sought after. Everyone writing a paper must find the info from primary or secondary documents - this then is not to hard to control.

Three months from now - type in something from your question - you'll see its archived.

I have a friend of mine whose job was to enter the information into the program and then to run the program and kick back any questionable papers for review by the professor that had given it to them. I think it is possible that it is being used. I also think it is possible that not every single paper that has been turned in has been put through the system.

Go to Google, the advanced section and type in a sentence from the last paper you turned in. You don't need any extra software, Google will find it for you if it's been published or on the internet.

The software or the teacher will know if you have plagiarised. Use your own words and quote what you need to. If it is truly your own work you won't have to worry. They'll only usually complain if 30% of the essay was plagiarised after that you can challenge them.

    no, that's for real.

you can even just use a search engine, but they have other specialized programs too.
