Hands down for me that would have to be: The Wrestler!

Why?! It was like watching a totally different Mickey Roarke! Not the same one really at all. I don't think he ever really felt comfortable, even if he was "supposed" to be acting in a role in any of his movies before. I honestly got the impression that Mickey has FINALLY grown up both in his mental capacity, & in his acting abilities.

By his performance in this film one could very easily see that he had put everything he had into this role! Which meant that he hadn't just screwed around with the part as he has always done before. Laying around drunk, stoned or whatever. He had actually given his all to the extensive, terrible training, working out hard! Above & Beyond even what most actors in the role would have. Especially with him being a Professional Box, wrestling being totally opposite would have been almost impossible to learn to do!

He actually Looked Healthy for a change & didn't allow himself to just come across, as he always has before, looking like some Bad A@s, who's just killed someone before showing up for the interview! There was Life in his eyes, color in his complexion, & He made SENSE! You could even understand him when he spoke! For me this was a biggie because he always seemed to mumble his way thru Life.

He actually pulled me, which I'm here to tell you isn't an easy thing to do @ all! Into his role as if he was truly living it himself! He came across as a real human being going thru life's troubles, hardships, trying to pull himself up in any way he could possibly think of. He really showed very strong, inner compassion, love, & true character.

These are all things that Mickey Roarke has never been able to bring across in a role, I feel, before! I think he definitely deserves to win the Oscar this year! But knowing the hoity-toity's who control that voting he still most probably isn't "pretty" enough, but one things for sure, I know for a fact we will most probably see his pet chihuahua there snuggled in his arms. The 1st time I saw Hollywood's Bad Boy come out on David Letterman's stage w/that itsy-bity tiny dog I fell off the couch I was laughing so hard. It's still an unbelievable image!

One of the greatest things I like about Mickey, especially in this film, is w/Him what you see is what you get! Simple fact! Most actors would have had Stunt People standing in for them by the dozens... NOT Mickey Roarke! All that blood & gore, All those bruises are REAL! He refused to allow the Real Wrestlers who were training him to Hold Back at ALL! Everything the viewer sees him go thru in & out of the ring isn't a Stand-In -- It's Mickey!

That's why he deserves an Oscar for Best Actor, and the Film for Best Film of the Year! This is a New Mickey Roarke! One that deserves R-E-S-P-E-C-T!

"Angel Heart". I think it was Mickey's best interpretation. This movie was a "thriller, a detective story and full of suspense". I think it was the only movie of him that I've watched from the beginning to the end.

Not even Robert de Niro was so good in it as was Mickey. Somehow, it wasn't even as acclaimed as it deserved. Surely if the soul is not the seat of waking consciousness and memory then what can be the big deal about selling it?

I agree with Angel Heart and 9 1/2 Weeks. He was also very good in Barfly.

  • 9 1/2 Weeks - great love scene with Kim Basinger.

The Wrestler. I had no idea he was such a convincing actor. He was also really good in Sin City and Diner.
