  • What are some of your idea/thoughts on "American Diversity," in the mid-1800's?

I am noticing a lot of correlations between American History in the mid-1800's -(Jacksonian Period up to the beginning of the Civil War) - & today... I would like to write a paper on it; including, pictures, cartoons, caricatures, etc., but I'm having a difficult time finding everything that I would like to include; plus, I'm also helping a student with a huge scrapbook on many of such subjects for AP American History.

I would so APPRECIATE ANY help that y'all might can give me on this subject: Ideas on subject matter (I have so many, but know that there are many more out there); possible sites for obtaining the related pictures; paintings; drawings; old newspaper cartoon... Anything at all!

I've been working in this for so many days, and hours straight, that I've hit a total brain block. I have always been a devoted lover of American History - it was also my 4-yr. co-Major; but, with the meds I'm on right now, I'm finding it difficult to put all my ideas/subject matter definitions together

Thanks in advance for ANY & ALL help from my Great Pals on Y!A!

BTW! It's great to be back on the computer after so long!!

  • Thinking about Thoreau's views in his "Civil Disobedience," essay...?

Considering the politicians we now have governing us, & our government as a whole do you feel:

1.) That we can ever reach the type of government that Thoreau advocated in his essay?

2.) Do you think our government today would be a Democracy in Thoreau's eyes? How about in YOUR eyes?... Please Explain.

3.) Thinking about what the definition of a Democracy is...

What areas of our government would Thoreau attack the most?

4.) Are there any political "leaders" today that you think Thoreau might Admire? Despise?

I know that when Thoreau wrote this essay he was referring to the government in relation to their actions in becoming involved in the Mexican War, but with the way we are losing OUR Rights so rapidly today, I feel his words really have more merit for us!

I would appreciate all of your views to my above questions, & any other related comments you would be willing to share on this subject...

    Thanks so much!!

  • My "Best Answers" are NOT Counting in the Total # Tally on my Profile Page!!.....?

The last several times that I have had an answer chosen as the "Best Answer" for a question, it has NOT shown up as "Counting" in the TOTAL Number of My Best Answers on My Profile Page. Why are my Best Answers NOT Counting?

I just received another one, & it didn't count either! This makes several now that I am SURE that I have NOT been given Credit for!!

It seems to be completely stuck on 202 no matter how many more emails I receive notifying me of my answers being chosen as "Best" Answers!!

This is really taking away a LOT of points from me; plus my "Best Answer" awards!

I tried to contact Y!A help, but as y'all know, that's a joke! I'm still trying to find out why I can't edit my answers after posting them... & that question was asked on the Suggestion Board months ago.

Please help, because I'm tired of LOSING POINTS!!

    Thanks for any assistance!! ♥♥Diana♥♥

  • I've added a NEW Alternate Email Address to My Yahoo Acct. & I'm Being Asked to Verify it - BUT it's NOT ...?

I just added a NEW Alternate Email Address to my Yahoo.com Account, & when I clicked on the "Verify" Email button to have the email sent to me in order to verify it, -- I was advised that an "Email would be sent to me at this NEW EMAIL ADDRESS." BUT! It won't allow me to sign in under the NEW USER ID EMAIL ADDRESS ID.

Am I doing this correctly? I'm signing out of my regular Yahoo.com Email address, & then trying to sign-in with this NEW one. Then I'm receiving the message that this NEW USER ID isn't TAKEN. I know it is because I've been using it for almost a year, but just haven't used the EMAIL with it before.

So here are the steps I've taken:

    1. Logged into Yahoo.com under OLD Email Address

    2. Signed-Out of OLD Email Address

    3. Tried Signing-In Under NEW User ID Email Address

** Always getting message "NEW" User ID Isn't Taken/Is Available **

I do hope I have explained this clearly in order that y'all can help me. I know I sound like a computer novice, which I most definitely am not...lol! I just can't seem to get my brain working today...;~).

Thanks so much for any help, & if any additional information is needed just let me know! Thanks so much in advance!!

  • Can U Believe this Email I rec'd.from Obama's Move On org. RE: DONATING MONEY to help w/Economy Legislation?

Please, help me understand how legislation being passed by our ELECTED OFFICIALS is any cause for these DEMOCRATS to be SOLICITING even MORE MONEY? Why should WE be paying for ads especially this guy that IS *supposedly* out of work?! Your thoughts please! From ALL Parties! Thanks!

    Subject: My situation

My family's been directly impacted by this crisis. Passing Obama's economic recovery package would help my family and millions of others. But, to do it, we need to swing a few Republicans, so MoveOn is airing ads in key states. Can you chip in $25 to help air the ad?

    Dear fellow MoveOn member,

I'm James. I'm a MoveOn member, dad to two teenagers, and, until recently, I had a pretty good job in construction. But the company I worked for lost a lot of projects when the economy tanked, and I got laid off, without much notice.

So I wanted to write to ask for your help. Not help for me, but for all the folks who are out of a job or otherwise struggling in this recession. Let me explain.

President Obama's economic recovery plan just passed in the House—it's got billions of dollars for education, mass transit, and clean energy. But what really gets me is that not a single Republican voted for it, despite all the efforts by President Obama to reach across the aisle. If the same thing happens in the Senate, it won't pass. But millions of families like mine need it to pass—it could put me, my former coworkers, and millions of other Americans back to work—and turn this economy around.

We need to get some Republicans on board. MoveOn has ads ready to go in key states—states where Republican senators are deciding right now whether or not to support Obama's plan. But time is running short. I just chipped in, and I hope you can help, too. Click here to contribute:

A new stimulus might mean a new job for me—weatherizing homes or constructing green affordable housing. It'd give my kids' school some much needed funding. And it could mean real investments in mass transportation to ease traffic and cut emissions.

This is a big moment, both for my family and for families around the country. If thousands of us act, we can get these swing senators to change their votes. But we'll need to do it fast—the vote could come as early as next week. I hope you can help out.

Thanks for being such a great community. And thanks for all you do.

  • How do I contact the Moderators at Y!A to see about have a Genealogy section added as a SPECIFIC ? category?

I would like to know how I go about contacting the powers that be at Y!A to see if they would add a SPECIFIC Genealogy category to Y!A? Not one sub-categorized under ANOTHER category that would make it more difficult for interested people to find it... But it's OWN separate category.

I've been doing Genealogical & Historical research since I was 9 yrs. old, & have all the certifications possible that enables me to do it to earn a good living if I want, but I've normally always done it for the sheer enjoyment.

I know there are tens of thousands out there that are searching, & are interested in this, & have untold questions but aren't sure exactly where to go to find answers... & Most of all, they have NO idea even how to word what they want to ask so the sites aren't any help to them.

That's why a SPECIFIC, SPECIAL DESIGNATED CATEGORY relating to this would be so GREAT! I would be happy to dedicate time to the site myself, too!

    Thanks so much!!

  • How many of you are feeling so full of joy and rejoicing in blessings today...?

First, let me say that I hope that ALL of MY SPECIAL, DEAR FRIENDS ON ANSWERS had a "TERRIFIC, BLESSED THANKSGIVING!"

    Now... On to my question...

After spending a day (hopefully) surrounded by loved ones with an abundance of food and Good Will yesterday... Possibly being able to be with those you haven't seen for so long ---- Ones you love so much, who've been such a great part of your life, but because of jobs, distance, etc., time has passed so fast & kept you a part.

WAS IT A DAY where it seemed time slowed down, & we could forget our jobs, & the hectic everyday lives that we all seem required to live today. We could take time to enjoy our family's. Usually several generations. The babies got to meet the elderly members of their family. Time seemed to stand still.... Or at least slow down for the day. We took time to Thank God for sparing the lives of those we love around us; for the jobs we still have; for the health of our family; & most of ALL that WE HAVE A FAMILY THAT IS ABLE TO GET TOGETHER, THAT SHARES SUCH a SPECIAL LOVE & BOND. That no matter what else happens in this cold, dark, cruel world that WE CAN ALWAYS COUNT ON KNOWING THAT THIS FAMILY THAT WE ARE SHARING THIS "THANKSGIVING" DAY with, WILL ALWAYS BE THERE BESIDE US HOLDING US UP, SUPPORTING US, WILLING TO DO ANYTHING -- EVEN SACRIFICING THEIR OWN LIVES FOR US!

BLESSINGS! YES! Today is a day that I have been contemplating all those that God has GRANTED ME! He continues to BLESS ME, & I WILL FOREVER THANK HIM for GIVING ME THEM! Now, I PRAY that He will continue to BLESS ME, MY FAMILY, & ALL MY FRIENDS until Next "THANKSGIVING, & BEYOND!"

I THANK GOD FOR EACH & EVERY ONE OF YOU, too!!

**** Did your "Thanksgiving" make you realize ALL the BLESSINGS that you've received as mine did? I would like to hear about some of them.

    Thanks so much! Diana

  • I went to see Gov. Palin today & found that she's nothing like she's been presented by the media...?

I wanted to see for myself exactly what kind of person Gov. Sarah Palin was compared to what the biased media has made her out to be. I feel that I am NOW an EXPERT on HER as I spent about 41/2 hours with HER, TODD, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, one of the co-hosts of the show, "The View", along with our State Gov., & others. She's a EXTREMELY KNOWLEDGEABLE WOMAN on ALL ASPECTS of Government! She was on TOP of EVERY ? on TAXES, the ECONOMY, FOREIGN AFFAIRS, ENERGY POLICIES, & our FINANCIAL CRISIS! Has anyone else on here done research to find out these SAME FACTS HER that the MEDIA SEEMS SO DETERMINED TO NOT BRING OUT ABOUT HER?

As I'm a REGISTERED DEMOCRAT, I was VERY CORDIAL, but VERY STRAIGHT FORWARD in my questions to HER!

  • What are your thoughts on athletes dying from sports concussions & others donating their brains for research?

This is a disturbing story for me because of serious concussions my family & I have received from various things including sports. This study shouldn't be just about pro-athletes... What about our kids out there playing NOW? Is that why there's changes in them? Let's hear your SERIOUS INPUT ONLY!! Because this is NO JOKING MATTER!

An article states, "that sixteen American athletes, including six former NFL players, have agreed to donate their brains to a program that will study the long-term effects of concussions, a founder of an organization running it said on Wednesday.

"Our goal is for people to start taking concussions seriously," said Chris Nowinski, a former pro wrestler and an American football player at Harvard. "That means getting off the field when they receive them and finding ways to prevent them."

Among former NFL players who have agreed to donate their brains after their deaths are Ted Johnson, Frank Wycheck, Isaiah Kacyvenski and Ben Lynch. Also participating are Noah Welch, who played in the NHL for the Florida Panthers last season, and Cindy Parlow, a former U.S. women's football international.

"I shouldn't have to prove to anybody that there's something wrong with me," Johnson, a former New England Patriots linebacker, told The New York Times.

The 35-year-old's neurologist has pointed to Johnson's multiple concussions from 2002-05 as a cause of his permanent and degenerative problems with memory and depression.

"I'm not being vindictive. I'm not trying to reach up from the grave and get the NFL," Johnson added. "But any doctor who doesn't connect concussions with long-term effects should be ashamed of themselves."

The center is expected to announce on Thursday that former Houston Oilers linebacker John Grimsley was the fifth deceased NFL player found to have brain damage commonly associated with boxers, according to the Times. Andre Waters, Mike Webster, Terry Long and Justin Strzelczyk were the first four.

Grimsley died in February of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in February that police ruled an accident.

  • Why do you think the SECRET picture of Elvis & Pres. Nixon taken 40 yrs ago is still the MOST REQUESTED today?

The secret meeting between two of the most improbable cultural icons of the 1970’s LASTED JUST 30 MINUTES, but it has fascinated people for years. A photo of a cloaked and bejeweled Elvis Presley solemnly shaking hands with a grim-faced President Nixon remains the Number ONE REQUESTED DOCUMENT in the National Archives, nearly FOUR DECADES AFTER the SECRET meeting took place on Dec. 21, 1970.

I must warn you, I want all of your opinions but I refuse to have any abusive or slanderous statements made about either of the subjects mentioned. This is NOT MEANT to be a page for you to make off-handed slurs, but one to make REAL FORTHRIGHT OPINIONS on a HISTORICAL MOMENT!
