Thinking about Thoreau's views in his "Civil Disobedience," essay...?
Considering the politicians we now have governing us, & our government as a whole do you feel:
1.) That we can ever reach the type of government that Thoreau advocated in his essay?
2.) Do you think our government today would be a Democracy in Thoreau's eyes? How about in YOUR eyes?... Please Explain.
3.) Thinking about what the definition of a Democracy is...
What areas of our government would Thoreau attack the most?
4.) Are there any political "leaders" today that you think Thoreau might Admire? Despise?
I know that when Thoreau wrote this essay he was referring to the government in relation to their actions in becoming involved in the Mexican War, but with the way we are losing OUR Rights so rapidly today, I feel his words really have more merit for us!
I would appreciate all of your views to my above questions, & any other related comments you would be willing to share on this subject...
Thanks so much!!

I 1st read Thoreau's, "Civil Disobedience," essay when I was a Jr. in High School. This was a very tumultuous, uneasy, political questioning time in America... So much so, it was said to have been utterly unique - NEVER happening before; nor, could anything like it ever happen again...
Little did we know that a few decades later… Those turbulent times in our history would have seemed like Pre-School happenings in comparison to what is happening in, & to OUR Country today! At least back then, MOST Americans still were tremendously, FIERCLY Patriotic! They openly stood open to "celebrities" such as Jane Fonda - Weren’t afraid to spit in her face, screamed calling her by her TRUE name... "TRAITOR!"
They boycotted & picketed EVERY venue where, & when she dared show her face in America. If a store was ignorant enough to endorse her, or any product with her name attached, they, too, were boycotted, & picketed, to the point they were forced to sever all ties with her.
Never could Thoreau have imagined in ALL of his wondrous insights into the ways of politicians, & government, that a time would EVER COME where Americans would simply set idly by, & allow, someone like Obama to EVEN BE ALLOWED to RUN for President!
With ALL the questions radiating around him as a person, CITIZEN, & God help us - His TOTAL LACK of ANY knowledge on how to run OUR up-to-NOW great country!
Then to continue pacifically simply sitting by & watching, while he & his gang of thugs run rampant. Annihilating the Constitution as if it wasn't even there. Destroying & taking away OUR FREEDOMS faster than Superman can catch a bullet in his teeth.
This has all been years in the making - I'm sure going back to the time I referred to at 1st. But, even as a child of those times, I sit in disbelief, shocked & totally confused that Americans have LOST EVERY bit of BACKBONE, EVERY BIT of the Sense of the Freedoms OUR Forefathers & ALL those since have fought & DIED for!
If there was EVER a time in America where Her CITIZENS NEEDED TO/When THEY MUST STAND-UP against those we elected, (or who crookedly got themselves elected!) - it is NOW! Every day that's allowed to pass, is ONE where MORE of OUR FREEDOMS are SNATCHED FROM US! Where OUR LIVES, & the Lives of ALL FUTURE GENERATIONS of Americans are DOOMED!
Thus, I felt it was time I revisited one of my favorite author’s of ALL time, & his famous essay: “Civil Disobedience!” I think that EVERY AMERICAN should go read it, REALLY READ IT. Absorb It, & ALL of its underlying meanings, fears, DIRECTIVES… & DECIDE! OUR Country, OUR GOVERNMENT, is JUST THAT - OURS! & It’s way time for US to take it back!
You can find this wonderful, enlightening, essay at:

I would suggest printing it, & really thinking about it!
Thank you for the great, honest answers already given here... I just find it very odd that there haven't been a LOT more answers... ♥☺♥
ALL of you gave such terrific answers!! & I realize this was a hard one because not many are really familiar with Thoreau's work/essay referenced here... * Y'all gave it a great shot! But, I haven't been able to get myself to choose a best answer!! I thought about letting it go to Tie-Busters for a vote; but then decided, as a part of that great group, I definitely couldn't do that... Plus, I love ALL Y'all so much... It's Soooo hard to choose between your answers!
So, since they won't allow me to choose all 3-of you, I decided to do it mathematically...lol! Thanks to ALL 3-of you who took the time to post an answer! You ALL deserved the best answer award!!
I LOVE ALL of YOU!!♥♥☺☺♥♥

I have not read his essay and I agree with the person that first answered you question. From the beginning of this Country there has been a certain faction that has been out to destroy it. Up until the 1930s there was no income tax. yet in the last 70+ years we have went form no income tax to 90% to 38% and now we are getting ready to go back up again. Obama is out to take as much as he can from everyone except his buds in congress. He is all ready spent more than the republicans did in the eight years under Bush.

Hi Southern Bell!
1st, i must admit, I have heard only portions of this topic, while watching History channel, while taking care of my 2 babies 20 years ago!
I did not click on the sight you had provided. But, I DID Google it in order to attempt a lil;memory cell to spark, and reconnect! What I I found, though, Hit me hard. So I will share this with you.
It is a quote:
"I became convinced that noncooperation with evil is as much a moral obligation as is cooperation with good. No other person has been more eloquent and passionate in getting this idea across than Henry David Thoreau. As a result of his writings and personal witness, we are the heirs of a legacy of creative protest." - Martin Luther King, Jr
So "Sweeter Cheeks, This is the extent of my answer. My mind id on SUCH overload, that I would have to allow some memory cells be put in storage, in order to become That involved to really dive in & give my opinion!
Please forgive me for not having the capability to Fully express all my thoughts.
Sincerely, Lillsoma
