Valentine's day gifts between friends?

So I have a guy friend who I have known for four or five years. He used to date my best friend, the broke up a few years ago and he and I have stayed close. Last year he bought me a valentine's day presant because I had just ended a five year relationship and was feeling down. He has been getting really clingy lately and is constantly messaging me or calling me and his sister told me he bought me a present this year for Valentine's Day. What do I do? If I buy him something it could be misconstrued, if I don't I seem like I don't care about him at all. And if I do get him something, what is a good gift that says "hey, we are friends" and not "hey, you are my valentine"?

    something extremly simple and minute...

    a card...

    or a bag of m&ms...

    keep it light...

even just a happy valentines day by text or message would suffice

I am confused here, you say she is your second best friend. but you want something to tell her how much you love her as a friend, then you saythat you like her as more than that. Does that mean you want to take her out.????? Just a small box of candy and/or just a card that says friend. You have to be very careful here, she may be wanting more of a relationship. I am not comfortable with anything as I am afraid that anything may be taken the wrong way. She must be hoping for something more if she is still around. You need to do some serious thinking. Do you have a no.1 girlfriend??

Get him a card that clearly states something like "For a friend on Valentines Day" or something like that...nothing that has to do with the word "Love". If he doesn't get that hint then you may just have to tell him straight out!

This anxiety of what to do, and what I should get is all about Valentines Day...I wouldn't worry about it too much. Valentines Day is supposed to be about someone you love. I do think you would be delivering a message to him that does not exist. Maybe he is delivering a message to you? GL

Tell him before you lose a friend. I don't think about you that way. I like you as a friend and I want to keep you that way. Then don't give mixed messages by becoming confused.
