You need Vista because you need to run Windows Media Centre to connect your Pc/Laptop to the Xbox.

    Go to Windows Media Player.

    Click on Library.

    Scroll down to Media Sharing.

    Allow your Xbox 360.

Xbox 360 has to be turned on and either plugged into laptop, or have the wireless bridge.

windows xp is compatible with the xbox 360 home entertainment system however it must be a "Windows Media Centre" p.c.

You do not have to have a windows media centre p.c for to stream movies, music or pictures to your xbox though as you can just link it up to your network and find your computers files via your xbox

I also had a need for this info. I used the XBOX.com support doc and had no problem setting it up. Essentially, both machines need to be on the network (LAN) and your XP system needs the media center extender component. Check out full instructions and detailed info here: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/windowsmediacen...

    Peace and good luck!
