Some help decoding the male brain please?

We're both seventeen.

They is this new guy in my English class. His first day was Monday, and he came in and sat at the back row, where I sit, but at the left corner. I sit in the middle. Then when I was leaving class, Britney (sits right next to me, on my right) said to me "Holy crap that guy is grilling you!" (Grilling = staring.) And I was like "What?" Then on Tuesday, I could see him out of the corner of my eye, and I was like, "Okay. Maybe he's staring cause we're loud." But on Wednesday Britney was home sick, and he came over to talk quickly. Conversation (NG =New guy, ME = Me... Obviously. Lol.):

NG: Hey, I'm Michael.

ME: Hi. Amanda.

NG: Cool. Am I going to get in trouble for not wearing my identification tag?

ME: Probably not. (Laughs.) I never wear mine, actually I never even got one.

NG: Oh. I saw you walking to school this morning...

ME: (Gives him a funny look.) Okay? Sorry, I'll fly to school tomorrow. (Laughs lightly.)

NG: No, I mean. (Looks down at shoes.) I mean can I buy a smoke off you.

ME: First ones free. (Laugh and hands him a smoke.)

NG: Thank you.

ME: No problem.

(Teacher walks in. NG proceeds to desk.)

Then today, Thursday, he moved to the group in front of mine, where he was facing me. But no one was sitting on the other side of the table of him or myself. So I could fully see he was staring at me. And I was like smooth. But anyways, I'm going to ask him on Tuesday (Cause Monday is a holiday, Family Day.) if he wants to sit at our group, so at least he get a clear view, but I don't know if that would make him uncomfortable. Then again, maybe he thinks he was being slick, in which case I don't want him to know he blew his cover. And then in the back of my mind I'm thinking, maybe I should just invite him to chill with me and my friends on the weekends. I know he's new to the school, and maybe he doesn't know anyone in the area to chill with on weekends. But then again, maybe he does have friends up here, and only stares because he just thinks I have a funny looking face or something. So... Help... You said I could come to you for advice, and I would like some advice how I should handle this situation, if you were the guy in this situation.

And do you think he actually likes me, or is my best friend is just trying to flatter me.

It doesn't hurt to ask him if he wants to hang out. New kids always need someone to break the ice and help them adjust. The worst that can happen is you meet a new friend, and that's pretty great in itself.

    He sounds interested though.
