R&P: Do you consider the Smashing Pumpkins grunge (and if possible, recommend me some songs)?

Being an alternative rock fan, you probably expect me to be a Smashing Pumpkins fan. Well, not really. I find Billy Corgan's voice to be irritating.

I've heard some of the band's hits (such as 1979, Bullet With Butterfly Wings, etc) but I don't really like them much. Any suggestions for me? :D

And, do you consider the band grunge? They're from Chicago, by the way.

Thanks everyone for their answers so far. All of you helped me! :)

Overall, I wouldn't call them grunge, though some of their songs do have grunge elements.

    Try the songs:

    Tonight, Tonight

    Zero

    Siva

    Rhinoceros

    Landslide (Fleetwood Mac cover)

    Disarm

    Adore

    Tarantula

    Doomsday Clock

    Today

    Cherub Rock

    Quiet

    Mayonaise

    Rocket

    Here Is No Why

F*ck You (An Ode to No One)

    Thru The Eyes of Ruby

    Tales of a Scorched Earth

    Muzzle

    Porcelina of the Vast Oceans

    Bodies

    Thirty - Three

    X.Y.U

We Only Come Out At Night

    I Am One

    Bury Me

    Crush

    Snail

    Tristessa

    Window Paine

    Ava Adore

    Eye

    Perfect

    BQ: Tonight, Tonight

BQ2: Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness

Yes the Smashing Pumpkins WERE grunge, and especially if you look at their live performances during the early 90's, Blly Corgan screams and growls a lot, and Albums like Siamese Dream and Gish definitely have a grunge aspect to them, with Dark lyrics and sludgy guitar sound, you can't possibly miss that.

    No. Not at all.

They have songs that could be considered grunge (Cherub Rock, barely), but they are not grunge. They're songs are put together better to be grunge and they're cleaner.

BQ- I don't even know anymore.

BQ2- Adore or Machina/The Machines of God or Siamese Dream

It's hard to say suggestions if you don't like his voice.

    Thirty Three

    Drown

    I of the Mourning

    In the Arms of Sleep

    Snail

    Rhinoceros

Those will probably just make you hate his voice even more.

Give me a day and a half and I can make a list of song with less annoying Billy vocals.

Not really. They definitely have some grunge-ish songs, especially on Mellon Collie, but I wouldn't consider them grunge by any means. You might like Machina II, it's very raw and grungy sounding, and it's free!

...but what does being from Chicago have to do with anything?

Oh ok that makes sense! I totally didn't make that connection, lol.

I don't really consider them grunge. Some of their songs have a grunge sound but not too many.

If you don't like those songs, then you more than likely won't like their other songs. Not to say they sound the same in every song but, I mean, it's his voice it will always sound like that.

BA: Don't really have one, I like 95% of their songs.

BA2: Probably Siamese Dream or Gish.

Now that I think about it, if you wanted something from them that might be different, check out Adore. It is different from their normal sound and its a bit softer I guess.

  • Sorry, I wouldn't know. But I'm interested in seeing some answers.

One time I was waiting to be picked up from school and my friend and I were waiting in the classroom. I was singing "Should I Stay or Should I Go" by the Clash when my teacher walks in. We started talking about music and she said she liked Bread and I told her a few of my favorite bands. She goes "Ughh ew! You must like those Smashing Pumpkin people as well!"

The Pumpkins started out grunge and then evolved as they went along. Their Machina album was mixed by Flood the same guys who did Trent Reznor's work. You can hear slight elements of techno on that album in a couple of tracks.

BQ- Zero from Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.

    Everlasting Gaze from Machina.

    BQ2- Siamese Dream.
