What does the symbol that looks like a 7 mean?
I have recently started playing the Mountain Dulcimer . When reading tabs ( I can't read music yet ) I have come across a symbol that looks like a 7 but is darker and has a small ball at the beging . What does it mean? Thanks
Dovi - no it does not look like that symbol. It look just like a 7 ,not curved at all. But thank you
Dovi- I googled eight note rest and sure enough that is it . It just looked different . Thanks so much !

Do you mean this image: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thum... ?
This is know as the "F" or "bass" clef. It basically tells you what pitch you are playing in, so you know what notes the notes on the sheet music are.
For in-depth info, visit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bass_clef#The_bass_cl...
EDIT:
As several people pointed out, it is probably the "8th note" rest: http://www.alesma.com/images/one8note.gif . This sign tells you that you need to rest - i.e. pause - for a quarter of a beat.
