Is it to early to spay black female lab pup?

Ive got a black female lab that stays at my parents house and they have a male west highland terrier. My lab was born 10-9-08, and their terrier is starting to hump the hell out of her. I kick him off (not literally kick) when I see them at it. Should I be worried he is impregnating her, and is it too early to get her spayed? The vet told me to wait until her teeth finally came in, but I dont need her pregnate yet, but didnt know if she was even old enough to be pregnate yet. Just a little over 4 mths old.

Update:

He is not neutered because my parents were going to breed him to a female westie and try to make some money. Never happened, and now he is 8 years old and still has nuts.

She can't get pregnant unless she's in heat. If she's already over 4 months old, you can schedule her spay in about a month's time before she has her first heat. Then you won't have to worry at all. It also cuts down her chances of getting cancer later in life!

She can be spayed this early, however, some would advise it is not in her best interest in terms of her long term health. Personally, I happen to be one of those people. There is research that suggests the sex hormones are linked to their growth and bone development. Based on research I have done, for females I would wait until 6 months.... that is typically about as late as you can go if you want to be certain you aren't cutting it too close to her first "heat cycle." There is no way of knowing exactly when she will go into heat for the first time, but most don't go into heat before 6 months (although, I am sure it can happen). With my male lab, I am waiting to neuter him until he is full grown (but females are more complicated).

All that said, as others have said, she probably isn't going to get pregnant at 4 months. However, you can spay her now.... it just may not be the safest in terms of her long-term health..... however, it is better than having an unwanted litter of pups around.

Your male dog is probably not mounting her on account of her being unspayed. Dogs often mount other dogs as a sign of dominance (they are showing they are dominant over the other dog). Spaying your female won't stop your terrier from mounting if he is doing it to be dominant. However, neutering the terrier might reduce his mounting behaviors.... although, since he isn't your dog, I imagine that isn't in your control.

She is old enough to spay at this point. As long as dog has reached 2 lbs weight and 8 weeks of age, they can be spayed. Females typically go into heat for the first time between 6-9 months, but it is not unheard of for a female to be a little early - rarely it can occur at 5 months. Of course you can always neuter him too.

I suspect at this point it is dominance behavior on his part but it wouldn't hurt to get her spayed now. Spaying her probably won't stop his humping. Only training and potentially neutering him is the way to stop that.

She can get pregnant at her age, however most vets recommend waiting until 6 months to spay to be safe. Her teeth should be coming in around now, but I would wait the 2 months to be safe. Is there any reason the male can't be neutered?

No, though some would wait until 6 months or older- some do 'early' spays. Discuss it further with your vet, but rest assured your dog is NOT having a heat at 4 months old, given her breed.

Why is he not neutered? And talk to the vet about the situation and see what can be done at this age.

A female dog should have her first season before being spayed for health and maturation reasons.

dogs generally come "on heat" when they are 6mths but some can come on at 5mths or sometimes they are late i would look into getting her desexed soon but she wouldnt be pregnant yet
