Dancers aren't the most verbal bunch to share with the non-dancing world that their shoes are called "pointe" shoes and NOT "toe" shoes, so you have non-dancing folks who think "Hey- look at that dancer on their toes!" and call the shoes "toe shoes". Those non-dancers also think its the shoes that make the dancer elevate to their pointes, not the countless hours of disciplined strength training and classes.
Yes- it really really bugs me!
If Americans were exposed to more dance culture, we might not have this ignorance. Keep in mind the US was founded by conservative religious groups, some of which thought dancing was evil- so dance has a rough time with mainstream culture.
What else bugs me is ballerina figurines, Christmas ornaments, Barbie dolls, etc that don't have proper ballet form like turnout, or have their pointe shoes laced up to their knees, or have toddler characters on pointe like a baby could or should ever dance on pointe.

Well. When then call pointe shoes toe shoes, they are kinda right. I do pointe and the key would be to use your toes. You rise up on releve and on your toes, i understand where the people who came up with it are coming from, but it can get annoying.
