My wife and I receive a lot of forwarded e-mails, see lots of names and addresses. is this safe or a risk?

A couple of my wifes friend send many e-mails that are forwarded each and every day. There are many addresses and names on these. is this safe or am I putting my computer at risk and if so what are the problems associated with this practice??

One of the habits of spammers is to steal valid email addresses and use them when they send out their emails. My wife and I went through a lot of that last year until Roger's started filtering it out.

One actually got my address and used it so I was receiving tons of mail from other people. So, don't respond. You'll be spamming someone else.

You can look at them but I wouldn't go to websites the point to or even reply to them unless you know the person (even then, ask them if they sent it).

    Just delete them.

Tell all your friends to please remove you from automatic forward (the CC feature) to stop the mail trash.

Apart from the nuisance of deleting all of them, you have no real way of knowing how secure all these other users systems are, and that can lead to serious repercussions if somebody gets any malware, which may then be forwarded to your system (a common method of virus propagation).

    Better safe than sorry.

Sometimes you can get viruses from forwarded emails. This is typically not the standard in al cases. My friend forwards alot of mail to me from a small group of family and friends. To this day, I have never received anything in terms of a virus.

It's most likely just friends of friends of friends and so on. You are safe as long as you don't accept attachments from people you don't know. To be safe always scan a file prior to downloading it! =)
