my friends and i played themed decks vs "random" decks, and the results were about even to who won, the variety of cards strategie can work, as long as you don't put in cards that do absolutely nothing for you, you should do pretty well

We really can't answer your question. You should at least list your cards and possibly your friend's cards as well. Your deck could be good or his is just worse. Variety of cards doesn't necessarily mean its bad.
