Which cat food at Whole Foods is most cruelty-free?

I am a vegan for years, and I have done enough research to know that cats should not be put on a strictly vegan diet. I have admittedly been very lax about cat food, grabbing whatever is available, until recently. I'd really like to start purchasing the best - for her, for supporting a good company, and for the animals.

I'd like a cat food that is readily available at Whole Foods. I can accept that there will be some poultry or fish in it, but I need to know who has the best practice and who is not treating those animals poorly + adding all sorts of nasty fillers.

Basically, the most vegan cat food without actually being vegan.

I buy Pet Promise. It's made from organic chicken - no byproducts, no factory farmed meat, no antibiotics or hormones, the chicken is sourced from family farms, a portion of the proceeds goes to the Organic Center for Education and Promotion, and it's endorsed by Dr. Andrew Weil.

It's expensive, but if you shop at Whole Foods you probably guessed that!

My cat thrives on the stuff- she's almost 19 and still thinks she's a kitten. (Right now she's attacking one of my shoelaces....)

I feed my cat on a fish only diet (available widely in supermarkets) so that I know at least that there was no slaughter house involved.

The cans I get (from Asda, UK) are produced in the same place that the tuna is (even in the same cans!! lol) and is sited as dolphin friendly.

To the best of my knowledge it is also from wild caught fish (just the tuns that won't go to the human market, like beef or chicken in other cat food), so up until capture the fish had as natural a life as possible.

Its hard to be a vegan and still love cats...my dog is a healthy sprightly 10 yr old who eats what we eat and is pretty much vegan (apart from the odd rabbit she catches :P) but I did a lot of hunting around and know cats can't thrive without meat.

Fish would be the most cruelty free since It got to live a free life before being cought. With the exception of a field mouse now and then all my cat gets is fish bassed catfood. It's also a more natural catfood since cats do catch fish, but couldn't catch a cow or pig.

I am unsure of the availability of this food at whole foods, however there is a cat food out there called Natural Balance which is essentially just wild salmon and brown rice.

I normally buy it at a little organic grocers near me, however I have seen it in best stores.

Merricks also has a new food out there which is just numbers (1,2,3,4,5,6) , which are Just whole meats and brown rice. Your best bet would a fish formula, preferably wild. (Farmed fish have a whole host of issues such as overcrowding, disease and they are usually farmed in areas which they are not native to making them a parasitic species if they do manage to make their way into the wild).

I would go with the natural balance or fire off an email to merricks to see if their fish is wild or farm.

As far as I can tell Wellness was the best one available at Whole Foods.

I do know what you are talking about, it is really hard to find a cat food that doesn't have lots of nasty fillers in it.

We DIY our pet food. I pay a bit extra for human quality stuff- more expensive, but I know where the meat comes from (Australia has a fairly good slaughter process, and while no process is nice, when it comes to feeding a pet who needs meat, its the better way to go, for me, at least). Other than that, a lot of vets reccomend keeping pets on dry diets, my best friend, who is a vet-nurse and Therapy Pet Trainer does this for her labrador. She buys an all-inclusive sort of health diet, so its good.

Organic food would come from organic meat which comes from fairly treated cows so get something like 365 organic, or wellness.
