Is $954 for a fuel pump replacement too much?

I have a 98 mustang. apparently there was no fuel pressure, took it to an independent shop and they said it will be $954 to replace the fuel pump and fuel filter. that includes diagnosis and labor. Is this a little steep?

The gas tank has to be removed to get to the fuel pump which is inside it. That takes a lot of time which costs about $100/Hr. The flat rate probably allows for draining the tank before removing it. You don't simply jump into this job. A bit of cleaning must be done before taking down the tank so it doesn't end up with a lot of dirt dropped in it. You might look for a cheaper shop, but try and get some quality in the work being done. Probably not a rip off for $600, but anybody would rather have fun with $600 instead of throwing it at a broken car.

The cost might be high. One problem is that there is gas in the tank. The insurance for the kind of job forces it to go up. It is the flammable material.

Another thing that could force the price up is the bands that go around the tank. Sometimes it is an automatic replacements for this job.

Sounds like way too much to ME. I had a Suburban which needed a new pump, and it took 4 guys to lower the tank and replace it, and the whole job cost me $350. about 8 years ago.

you do the math. maybe $150-$200 for the pump and 2 hours labor.

so yeah, too steep by more than $500

yea that sounds way to much! here's a idea for you go to www.autozone.com or just call any auto parts store and ask them you need the price on a fuel pump and fuel filter for your car and see how much that cost.....

Ask them to itemize it. This is a typical rip-off here. Even if

you don't have them do it. They are going to try to rail you on

the diagnosis . I'd check into this ... You never mentioned what

    size engine.

    Good Luck..

yes that's enough to do two mustangs and still get some change back,id have another shop do this one ,their over charging you really bad on this one,it takes about 2.5 hours labor to do one of those,so their getting you real bad on this one, good luck.
