Many General Managers get hired due to there highly educational backround and experience in baseball. There are many education requirements in order to become a MLB General Manager Many General Managers must have gone to college and got a degree in finance / business management or sports management. Then study law and have a good understanding of contract law. As the GM you need an understanding of the broad spectrum of everything that goes on with a team.. They also must have many years of experience in the field, to be hired.

Many Future General Managers started out as baseball players, then baseball scouts, and then when on to become a Scouting Supervisor, and vice president of player development/scouting. Some started out at lower level positions in baseball, minor leagues or below, and worked there way up the ranks. Then served as assistant general managers before moving into the roles as special assistant to the general manager. They learn the rules, the in and outs, and appreciate and respect the history of the game. They learn to evaluate talent, by the Study young players. Knowing young talent makes a GM great and gives him options to make deals later. As they gained experience and increased responsiblility they gain the skills required to become a successful MLB General Manager.

Many of the skills required are a General Manager must be intelligent, analytical and driven to succeed. They must be an outstanding evaluator of talent and have strong leadership skills, character, commitment and broad experience to build and lead an outstanding baseball operations staff and to implement the systems necessary to succeed. They must know how to evaluate and aggressively acquire elite talent internationally and domestically. A general manager must know how to cultivate that talent on and off the field in a process-oriented player development system, and must demand accountability and excellence from all staff and players.

The General Manager must beable to take charge and be a leader of the organization. They must beable to negotiate with people(other GM'S.), and face alot of pressure not only from the top of the franchise including the owner, and the media. They must have the knowledge of all aspects of baseball management

Go to school for sports management, work hard, make friends with people who work in baseball, get a job in the front office of a baseball team and work your way up.
