go to the apple ipod website. there will be a list of the top 5 things to do to try to make your ipod work before calling apple for support.

    ONE of those should work.

There are two buttons to hold down at the same time to soft or hard reboot.

If your iPod is frozen or won't turn on, it may be because iPod is paused or the Hold switch is in the locked position. If so, a lock symbol appears on the screen. Slide the Hold switch to the unlocked position and check the screen.

If the iPod is connected to a computer and displays any of the following messages you should eject the iPod from within iTunes instead of resetting it:

    Connected. Eject before disconnecting

    Sync in Progress. Please wait...

    Do not disconnect

If your iPod is frozen or won't turn on, the steps to reset it vary by model.

o reset iPod, iPod (scroll wheel), iPod (touch wheel), and iPod (dock connector)

Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)

Press and hold the Play/Pause and Menu buttons simultaneously until the Apple/iPod logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.

If you are still unable to reset your iPod, use only one finger from one hand to press the Center (Select) button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Menu button.

If you're having trouble with your iPod, try these steps (known around here as the five Rs) one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.

Retry your iPod with a different USB or FireWire port on your computer (please note that the latest iPods can only be synced through USB).

Reset your iPod. To reset an iPod, iPod nano, or iPod mini, press and hold the Menu and Select buttons until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step. To reset an iPod shuffle, disconnect iPod shuffle from the computer (if connected), and then move the switch on the back of iPod shuffle to the off position. Wait 5 seconds, and then move the switch on the back to the play in order or the shuffle position.

Restart your computer, and make sure that you have the latest software updates installed.

Reinstall your iTunes software and make sure you have downloaded the latest version. Check your iPod software by connecting your iPod to your computer, and then in iTunes, select your iPod in the Source pane. Click the Summary tab, and the Version section tells you whether iPod is up to date or needs a newer version of the software. Click Update to install the latest version of the software.

Restore your iPod by connecting your iPod to your computer, and then in iTunes, select your iPod in the Source pane. Click the Summary tab, and click Restore to restore iPod to its original settings. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the restore process. (Important: Please note that restoring an iPod will erase all songs and files on your iPod and restore it back to its original settings. Make a backup of any files on your iPod before restoring it. After restoring, you can transfer your music and files from your computer back to your iPod again.)

Check Device Manager first (right-click on My Computer, choose Manage, and then select Device Manager).

Before starting, make sure your iPod is fully charged and then toggle the Hold switch on and off.

Press and hold the center button and menu button for a few seconds. This'll reset your iPod.

Most likely you just removed it while it was still connected.

    Or your cable is damaged.
