Other than hitting the "Apply Now" button on job search web sites, how does one go about looking for a job?

With no recent experience, no friends and family (other than immediate family) within 200 miles, what do you do?

Update:

Wow, how do you follow up after hitting the Apply Now button without contact info? The jobs I've applied for don't have any people's names, phone numbers, or email addresses.

Without having an "in" somewhere it is going to be a little harder to find a job, especially with today’s economy. The best and most efficient thing would be to apply to as many jobs in your area in the field you want to work. The most important thing is to follow up with each and every one of them. So many people apply for jobs by hitting the "apply now" button and wait for someone to call. Its not gonna happen. Just like everything else, the more you put in the more you get back. The site http://theonlinebeat.com/ offers a search where you can check the postings on 5 different major job boards and you only enter your job description and location once. It saves some time and helps you keep track of the jobs you applied for. Good luck!!!

Write up a good resume that describes your qualifications and the kind of position you would really like. Write it in clear English with complete sentences. Make it sound like you are an interesting person that other people would like to spend time with. Often the question of whether they like you or not is as important as your actual qualifications. Put it into a word document and attach it to emails that you send individually to all of your friends and just ask them to pass it on to anyone who might have an opening.

  • Before I had my own business, I use Monster.com to look for jobs, they have recruiters who can shop for you like you shop on line. Start there and you can get the company info and call them up yourself. With monster.com, instead of taking any job you can actually apply for the job you want. Good Luck!
