Chemistry Lab: Acid rain: Sulphuric acid or hydrochloric acid?!?

I did a chemistry experiment on the effect of acid rain on various building materials. I used hydrochloric acid, i know sulphuric acid is more silimar to acid rain, right?

Would there have been a difference if i would have used sulphuric acid instead of hydrochloric acid (e.g. reaction be faster/slower? )

the reaction would be somewhat different for acid rain ( contains sulfuric and nitric acids ) as nitric acid is a decent oxidizing agent while dilute HCl nor sulfuric oxidize very well. There are also some solubility of products issues as sulfates and nitrates have different solubility profiles in many cases compared to chlorides. All are 100% ionized strong acids so at least the pH per se would be quite similar.

Go and check out your local hardware store (not kidding here) Look for Muriatic Acid, which is HCl, and a chemical called "Liquid Fire" aka Sulfuric Acid. Both of these are found in the section for pipe maintenence. I think that the Liquid Fire is around $12 a bottle and the Muriatic acid is $10. Just be careful with it- don't breathe the vapors from HCl, and don't get any sulfuric on you or your clothes

Yes acid rain contains Sulphuric acid and Nitric acid.

HCl reacts with some substances these two dont and i think the affinity of chlorine is much more than other substances making the reaction of actual acid rain faster (not sure about this affinity thing).....
