1989 Buick Park Ave/ Solenoid problem?
I have a 1989 (or 1991, I can't remember) Buick Park Ave. that is not starting. It has a new (yes, charged) battery and newish starter. When I turn the car on, the interior lights, cd player, headlights, heat, air, wipers, etc. all work. But when I try to start it, nothing happens. It kind of "hums" but doesn't turnover or even struggle to turn over. Just silence. And the car does start sometimes. Completely at random, although usually when it's warmer outside. I've been told it's probably a loose connection to the solenoid. Or possibly needs a new ignition switch. Any other ideas? Anyone else ever have this problem?
Thanks in advance!
The battery is new. The car has been having this problem for a few months now. After I put the new battery in, the car started perfectly for about a week. At this point, it hasn't started at all in over a week. (Before the new battery, it wouldn't start for a day or two, but never more than a week)

Has anyone check the *coil pack?* (modern ignition coil). It could be bad. The noise "hums" means that your fuel pump is working. If there is no spark on any of the spark plugs, that means that the coil pack is bad.
Other things to look for are:
Make sure that the *batteries* are really good. Fully charged don't mean anything. I do have lots of batteries that are fully charged but they don't work at all. Best bet is really put a new one to be very sure that it is good...
You mentioned that the engine hums,but that could be anything. If the *fuel pump* don't work, then the car won't start. A fuel test can be done by removing the plug at the end of the fuel rail. Note: Remove the cap, removed the fuel release valve inside the rail. (similar to a tire valve) and use a hose long enough to reach a fuel can (find a hose with the right diameter). Connect or push that hose at the end of the fuel rail and into a bucket or a fuel can. Turn master switch on. ( Ask a helper or someone that has any idea about cars). If the pump is working, it should shoot lots of fuel into the fuel can. Be very careful with the fuel. Shut the switch off and continue to find the problem if the fuel pump is good. If it doesn't work,replace the fuel pump.
* Spark plug wires, spark plugs.
* AIC- air idle control sensor
* TPS-throttle position sensor
* Cam sensor
Start with the battery and work you way down with the problem listed below. Good luck.

it could be the same thing that happened to my 1988 oldsmobile. my module went out. all it did was crank until i changed it. it also could be the fuel filter too, not letting the gas come through the lines or the fuel pump. i would check for spark first at the plugs. if no spark change the module.
