Upgrading RAM on a laptop?

I have a Compaq Presario 2100 and I am upgrading the RAM on it. I bought a 512MB DDR card and replaced one of the 256 MB cards in it. My question is, since supposedly these work as a set, when I put another 512MB card into it, will I have a G of RAM? Or since the combined of these (the two old 256) is 512, is that my max?

I tried looking online, but I got various answers.

Update:

Actually, not a G, my bad.

notably lots the only issues upgradable on a computing gadget are RAM and puzzling disk stress. as long because of the fact the cd stress has many times occurring connection and type, it may too often times. The video card, community card, and sound taking part in cards are all integrated onto the motherboard and there are no extra ports for including puzzling drives (on maximum laptops. some help twin drives, so which you would be able to upload one). To the guy above, All laptops have a various decrease to how lots RAM they could help. And no laptops interior the international different than 2 or 3 fanatic fashions from some years in the past help switchable photographs taking part in cards. it particularly is a probability to enhance the processor, yet you particularly ought to be attentive to what you're doing. additionally, each computing gadget has a custom made motherboard basically for that kind relatives. case in point, the HP dv66xx sequence lined many fashions with diverse motherboards, however an identical ideal physique, so the forums could be switched out basically between dv66xx fashions.
