Why is my Degu EATING his bathing sand!?

seriously, its really wired. For some reason my degu thinks his bathing sand is food :S, and he eats it! This cant be healthy.. So i take it away. How can i stop him..? and why on earth does he think its food anyway??

    I'd only give it to him to bathe in maybe once every four days...I wouldn't leave it in there constantly. Maybe he won't eat it if he only has access to it for short periods.

    If it says its non-poisonous on the front then that is going to be ok... My syrian used to consume potty clutter yet on the front of the field it suggested puppy secure & non poisonous so it grew to become into ok and that i in simple terms did no longer placed anymore in there for her and took something out. i think of they are going to quickly decide it is not nutrition:)
