My Hard Drive failed the "DST Short Test." What does this mean? How can I fix this problem?

When I boot my computer, I get a black screen that states that there are no boot sequences available. At this point, I ran a test and everything was good except the hard drive. It stated that the hard drive failed the "DST short test."

What can I do to fix this problem? Is there anything I can do to recover my files? If possible, please explain things clearly because I am not a computer whiz...thank you!

I found something else on the net about this and the person remedied this by booting from the XP installation disk, using the recovery mode and running chkdsk.

So, it may just be an error on the drive that can be fixed.

Your question should be: What short term solution exists that would result in dramatically lower gasoline prices (at least $1.00 cheaper) in the next 120 days, and, incidentally, lower home heating oil prices before winter? A windfall profits tax is unlikely to change the world price of oil. In fact, it would almost ensure a rise in prices at the pumps. Over time the revenues raised by the windfall profits tax may be successfully invested in alternative energy sectors that ultimately deliver cheaper energy to American consumers, but that proposition is years away at best. Likewise, suspending the federal gas tax would mean that gas stations could keep prices at their current levels and collect 17 more cents a gallon. Why would any gas station pass those savings along if they were not legally compelled to do so? Meanwhile, even if you did see savings at the pump it would not because the world price of a barrel of oil had fallen, but because the Federal government had decided to forego the tax that it uses to build, maintain, repair and maintain roads and bridges that keep Americans connected to one another. So you could suspend the federal gas tax and you might see some savings, but those savings are temporary because without the federal gas tax the interstate highway system will literally crumble making travel difficult until it becomes impossible. The first line of inquiry should be a Congressional probe into the oil futures market. I believe that less than a decade ago experts estimated that the actual cost of producing a barrel of oil was about $15. I'm sure the cost of drilling for offshore oil has increased substantially, but I doubt that it justifies $135 per barrel oil. Start with the Congressional investigation and see where the evidence leads us. It may be that supply and demand are in near-perfect equilibrium, but it may be that that is not the case. For instance, it has only been in the last 18 months or so that we have learned that many of the exotic securities sold by Wall Street investment banks were collateralized with junk quality mortage obligations. There's a lesson to be learned from that fiasco (not to mention the Enron fiasco or the recent Societie General situation in France), which is that when there are big profits to be made in any economic sector there are any number of individuals who will break the rules and regulations that have been imposed to make those markets work fairly and efficiently in order to reap unlawful profits. Let's make sure that unlawful market manipulation isn't at the root of the unprecedented rise in the world price of oil. If it is, then we will have to deal with any lawbreaker swiftly and harshly. If not, then we will have considerably more reliable information on the factors propelling the world price of oil. And then the next president can formulate a comprehensive long-term national energy policy that will ensure affordable energy for American consumers and businesses for decades to come. Agreed?
