New York , especially NY City is very Easy ..
my favorite place to eat is vegan , Candle 79 ( at 79th street and Lexington) and
Candle Cafe their sister rest. (vegetarian) is at 1307 3rd ave
There are also many Indian Restaurants as Madras Mahal ( strict vegetarian ) at 104 Lexington ,and Madras Cafe in the East Village at 2nd ave and East 4th..
Also try House of Vegetarian at 68 Mott Street
if you go down to the village there are tons of little vegetarian and vegan cafes / plus almost every cafe will have vegetarian options .Just walk around or ask ..some are very Tiny but the food is great!.
On the Island it is a bit harder , There is Green Melody at 519 north Broadway in Jericho ( it is Vegan)
And several vegetarian ( vegan friendly ) Indian Restaurants as Dosa Dinner and House of Dosa both on Broadway in Hicksville ..
Most other places have vegetarian options but not strcitly vegetarian .
Also you would have No problem eating Italian at most Restaurants ( just make sure no animal broth in the sauce although that would be the exception not the rule) get Pasta Prima Vera , or any Pasta Marinara , Pasta with pesto , and Pasta garlic and Oil or an Eggplant Dish ..Do not be afraid to ask ..
For fast food : Pannera has 2 Veggie soups and a sandwich , they also list of which Breads are vegetarian/vegan in a book
Subway has two veggies options ,
Wendy's has a baked potato or fries and some will have salad ,
Taco bell has a few options with their beans in a taco shell and
Pizza Hut ,the thin crust in vegetarian .
Hope you have a great trip and if you need help email me!

Well, if you're not vegan, then you can eat dairy, right? Just eat New York Cheesecake all day... lol.
Or maybe a bagel in the mornings.
Most vegetarians make their own food, but New York is a huge, diverse city, so I'm sure there are tons of options for you. Just stay away from the typical, touristy restaurants, like Deli's, which are all about the meat they serve. A lot of places should have salad's available, hopefully without meat... although, most salads have meat on them now.
You can go to Ray's pizza and get a couple slices of pizza, again, if you eat dairy. They have a ton of different pizza's that don't have meat on it. AND MY GOD, they have some good pizza. I'm not from NY, but I went last year, and ate there like, 3 times.
If you eat fish, then you can surely find a Japanese restaurant and eat some sushi.
Subway is a quick and easy lunch, and you can get a really good veggie sandwich from them.
Also, if you stay in a hotel, you can ask the concierge if they have any suggestions for you.
Too bad you don't eat meat... cuz they have this Halal food stand out by the Hilton that I stayed at, and it was some kickass food.... Also, Gray's Papaya has some awesome hotdogs... which is something everyone should eat at least once while being in NYC.

New York City? There are a ton of places to eat in NYC. There are a lot of falafel places...I love falafel.
This site has some short reviews of vegetarian restaurants:

But you don't have to go to a specifically vegetarian restaurant. Most restaurants will have a few options, and most of the nicer restaurants will be happy to make something special for you by request (if you call ahead).
If you're going to be on Long Island, which is where I'm from, it's probably a little harder to find something to eat, but if you go to an Italian restaurant or a Chinese restaurant there's almost always something to eat.
If you're going upstate, it'll likely be a bit harder. It depends, if you're going to one of the upstate cities, you'll probably find something, but I lived out in the country upstate for a few years, and my options were: pizza, Chinese, or Subway...and I was lucky to have those options!
Good luck, and have fun!
Edit..oops, it looks like we all gave you the same link! Here's another one:

Look closer at the menu. Your meal doesn't need to be listed under "entrees". Every restaurant has some vegetarian choices even if they aren't listed as such.
If that doesn't suffice, look up restaurants online that cater to your diet so you're aware of them before you arrive.
