Auto industry woes? Solutions?

Why can't we just resolve the domestic auto industry problems by introducing prohibitive tariffs on Asian imports? If we are going to keep our domestic industry alive aren't tariffs a little more honest than government intervention? At least it would give the appearance that the big 3 aren't charity cases. It is one or the other isn't it? The only other option seems to be admitting that foreign automakers are far superior in most every respect and let the free market do it's work....but that would probably result in the closure of one or all three US automakers. What is the solution?

Wait a minute, people have no money, they need cheap and reliable transport and what do you do?

You want to place high taxes on it so that bad, unreliable and expensive home made transport becomes artificially more viable?

That's akin to shooting yourself in the testicles!

If US auto makers can't compete, they will close down, period.

Having said that, you Americans are probably not following that closely Chevrolet's European efforts with the Matiz, and I have to say Chevrolet are showing more cohones and brains that you'd think them capable of.

I almost bought one of them myself! Read: *almost*.

Isolating our economies from one another is not going to help anything in the long run. The governments of the world are throwing so much money around but they don't seem to be committed in actually doing anything productive.

i think our governments should start offering low, to even no interest loans to the general population, to free the flow of credit. It a lot better than cash hand outs..

    1 billion dollars = 20,000 50K loans...
