Should I choose the Army or Air Force?
I'm graduating from GWU this year and am planning on joining the military, but am having a hard time deciding between the Air Force and the Army. I don't see an overwhelming negative to either, and was hoping to get the perspective of a few of you who may have served or have a family member who served.
As for me, I'm an International Affairs major with a concentration in Asian Studies and Mandarin Chinese. I would like to end up working in an intelligence capacity. Also, I'm pretty adventurous, so I'll more than likely want to do some of the more "fun" training when I'm in, like SERE school.
Any recommendations?
Thanks, Josh, I'll look into it. I know it is not easy to do that stuff, but for me, pushing myself is fun.
I know the Navy is great and all. The problem is that I have a real desire to spend most of my time on terra firma, as opposed to months at a time at sea.
Sorry Charly, I should have said that. I plan on going into OCS. I will not be enlisting.

Ya, go and see if your head will fit in the Jar... Marine intelligence is by far the way to go...

For the most abilities in the broadest fields, Navy and Marines, with the Navy staying the most out of harm's way until general quarters... For the most specialized training on a single piece of equipment, the Air-farce... but I'll tell you, I was USN and I found the 7 air-force bases I visited lacking in a special kind of pride. I'll try and give you an example
Our squadron had an A-4 go down for an engine in White Sands... I went as an AE-1 QAR-CDI fully cross-trained. I split the aircraft apart, pulled the old engine, put in the new engine, low-powered and high-power tested the engine... I did the daily and turnaround inspection, had the pilot sign off the cards, and sent him out on the post maintenance check flight with an alternate landing site. The Air-force people I was with said they had 19 different shops to do what I did with that engine change... granted the Navy has 5 shops and I did the work of all 5 of them, but the level of specialization in the Air-force... and the US Marines... Marine Aviation is by far the best people I have EVER worked with, and they have 3 shops...

If you want to do intelligence work I think you'd be better off working for the CIA or NSA, and maybe commissioning as a Reserve Officer in one of the military branches, if you also want to serve in the military. I know this is not necessarily a reliable indicator but the USMA and USNA now have majors in Chinese and Arabic, their only foreign language majors, while the Air Force Academy does not. This tends to make me believe that knowledge of the Chinese language, history and politics is less a priority in the Air Force than the Army, Navy or Marines.
Good Luck!

Seriously, would you wanna go in as an Officer or enlsited? because if you would enlist as a normal soldier in the army i can tell you you won't be happy. It sounds like you're a smart guy and in the Army when you're anything under E-6 (which will take you about 10 years or so to get depending on the specialty..)you're getting treated like everyone's *****.. Moving boxes, counting stuff, digging in trash... the regular army makes you go through a lot of bullshit and there won't be anything you can do about it. Are you married? Cause if you are also the families get better treatment in the Air Force. My husband is in Iraq right now. And he regrets everyday that he didnt sign up for Air Force. If you will go in as an Officer thats a different thing. Than it will probably be about the same for you...

I would suggest you join the army. In my family, there are a lot of members who are and have been in the army.
If you join the army, you can get a job at an embassy in other countries. You get different missions located in different countries and you are able to explore other cultures,...
When you join the army, you immediatly join the intelligence capacity. Although you will have to wait a few years but if the army decides you are amazing, you could be send to the intelligence.
Army is much more fun and adventurous than the air force.
Air force, you are able to fight with your 'plane' but in the army you have many different options in life.

My deceased Dad was a 21 year Army Veteran who was highly decorated and even had the Silver Star in WWII and the Korean War. The Army does most of the "foot work' and I guess I am partial, but both sound like a good choice. Ultimately, the choice is yours. Good luck and thank you for wanting to serve our country!

Intelligence work with a Chinese background? Honestly, I'd say Naval Intelligence is where you wanna be.
