Is it an illeagal question on an application to ask for you SSN?

I have herd that you don't actually have to give your SSN out unless you get hired, true or not true....Thanks!!!

    A lot of jobs do a background check before you get hired... therefore, they need your SS#.

    Other than that, you question/answer sounds reasonable.

    It is not illegal but you can decline to give it. However, declining to give it creates a slew of other problems.
