Hernan Cortez happened. He was a Spanish conquistador who landed with a small army. There are four main factors that led to the Aztec's fall. First, the Spanish had superior weaponry and horses. Second, the Spanish also introduced virulent diseases into the Aztec population such as smallpox and plague. Third, the Aztecs allowed them to come to Tenochtitlan because the appearance of Cortez and his men aligned with the Aztec's mythology. They believed that he was the second coming of Quetzalcoatl. Finally, the Aztecs practiced human sacrifice, and a lot of it. Because of that the surrounding tribes helped the Spanish overthrow them.

The conquistadors nearly wiped them out with disease, slave labor, putting down rebellions and forced conversions. Later, colonists from Spain inter-wed with the converted Aztecs (eventually modern Mexicans).
