Knitting.....what does this mean?

In a pattern it says "12sts from 11 cast on at lower edge" so can anyone tell me what this means please?

I'm asking this for a friend who has got well and truly stuck on a project she is knitting & I don't know what it means either lol.

Update:

I hope the following makes my question more understandable. This is the info I've been given to ask about here. Thank you for all help received.

'using your smaller needles pick up and knit sts for lower edging as follows, with the right side of the work facing you, starting at lower edge of neck edging, pick up and knit 3sts from side edge of neck edging, 6 sts evenly down straight edge, 16 sts evenly down shaped edge, 12 sts from 11 cast on sts at lower edge of left front, 49 sts from lower edge of back, 12sts from 11 cast on sts at lower edge of right front, 16 sts evenly up shaped edge, 6 sts evenly up straight edge and 3sts evenly from side edge of neck edging. you will now have 123 sts on the needle. work 1 row garter sitch.

I'm guessing this is some sort of shrug or cardigan. It would be helpful to look at the schematic for the finished pieces. Basically, you're preparing to knit an edging. You would do this:

    1. "with the right side of the work facing you" Turn the project so the right side is "up." You will start on the left side of the project.

    2. "starting at lower edge of neck edging" Locate the neck edging, which is already in place. Start there by picking up and knitting 3 stitches from the side edge of the neck edging. To pick up and knit, pick up a stitch from the project and pull a loop of yarn through it. Do that 3 times.

    3. "6 sts evenly down straight edge" From the lower edge of the neck edging, where you just picked up loops through 3 stitches, you will continue down the straight edge, picking up loops through 6 stitches there. If there are more than 6 stitches in that straight edge, spread out the loops you pick up so they look even in that row.

    4. "16 sts evenly down shaped edge" The edge is shaped here--perhaps for a tie? Again, you need to pick up 16 loops from that edge. If there are more than 16 stitches available, you'll need to pick up the stitches evenly across.

    5. "12 sts from 11 cast on sts at lower edge of left front" You previously cast on 11 sts at the lower edge of the shaped part of the front. You will pick up 12 loops through those 11 sts (clearly, one of them has 2 loops).

    6. "49 sts from lower edge of back," Across the lower edge of the back, evenly pick up 49 loops through the stitches there.

    7. "12 sts from 11 cast on sts at lower edge of right front" You previously cast on 11 sts at the lower edge of the shaped part of this front half as well. You will pick up 12 loops through those 11 sts (clearly, one of them has 2 loops).

    8. "16 sts evenly up shaped edge" The edge is shaped here to match the other side. Again, you need to pick up 16 loops from that edge. If there are more than 16 stitches available, you'll need to pick up the stitches evenly across.

    9. "6 sts evenly up straight edge" To match the left side, you will continue up the straight edge of the right side, picking up loops through 6 stitches there. If there are more than 6 stitches in that straight edge, spread out the loops you pick up so they look even in that row.

    10. "3sts evenly from side edge of neck edging" The final step is to pick up the 3 stitches from the side edge of the neck edging. You will then have 123 stitches on your circular needle, starting at the left neck edging, progressing down the left side and around the back to the right side, and up the right side to the right neck edging.

    11. "Work 1 row garter stitch." Knit one row on those 123 stitches.
