How do you convert a video on a DVD into a computer file like a "mpg"?
Someone recorded a video of me on their camcorder and transferred the video to a DVD-R. I want to record the video onto the computer as a video file (i.e. mpg). Can I do it with Media Player or Movie Maker? If not how can I do it? Thank you.

you may use E.M. Free DVD Copy, this software can convert DVD files to all popular video files into your computer, so you can move your video to your computer from DVD,also this converter has snapshot functions. you can capture photos from the video when you preview your video in the right window.
just free download it here and have a try:

You can use Handbrake (free)
http://handbrake.fr/?article=download
It was primarily a mac program, but you can get the windows version, you'll probably want the GUI one.
When you open the program, pick your source (the dvd), the destination (where you want to save the file), and pick a preset on the right (something like quicktime). Then hit start.
